International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures 2025

The world observed the first-ever International Day Against Unilateral Coercive Measures on 4 December 2025, following its proclamation by the UN General Assembly in June 2025. This global day aims to highlight the negative humanitarian and economic consequences of sanctions and restrictions imposed unilaterally—that is, by one country against another without the approval of the UN system or adherence to international law.

According to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), Unilateral Coercive Measures (UCMs) include economic, financial, or trade limitations placed on a nation to alter its internal decisions or political behaviour. The observance seeks to bring global attention to how such measures can worsen poverty, restrict essential supplies, and undermine the rights and well-being of affected populations.

Indian Navy Day 2025

Indian Navy Day is celebrated each year on 4 December to honour the courage, professionalism, and achievements of the Indian Navy. The day serves to inform citizens about the Navy’s contributions to national security, its role in safeguarding maritime borders, and its growing technological capabilities.

The theme for 2025, “Combat Ready, Cohesive, Self-Reliant,” reflects India’s emphasis on indigenous defence innovation under the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. The date commemorates the Navy’s decisive victory during the 1971 Indo-Pak War, when Indian naval forces carried out Operation Trident, sinking four Pakistani vessels including PNS Khaibar, significantly weakening Pakistan’s maritime strength.

Bharat Taxi Begins Trials in Delhi and Gujarat

Bharat Taxi, India’s newly launched cooperative ride-hailing initiative, has begun its pilot operations in Delhi and Gujarat, signalling a major shift in the country’s mobility sector. Operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, the platform aims to provide a fairer alternative to private aggregators like Uber and Ola.

The service stands out for its zero commission policy, transparency in fares, no surge pricing, and a driver-centric cooperative ownership model. Developed with support from the Union Ministry of Cooperation and the National e-Governance Division (NeGD), Bharat Taxi aligns with the government’s “Sahakar Se Samriddhi” (Prosperity through Cooperatives) vision, which seeks to strengthen cooperative models across sectors.

Lok Sabha Passes Central Excise (Amendment) Bill 2025

The Lok Sabha has approved the Central Excise (Amendment) Bill, 2025, along with the Health and National Security Cess Bill, 2025, introducing a reformed tax structure for “sin goods” such as cigarettes, tobacco, and pan masala. These reforms are designed to replace the existing GST compensation cess, which will be phased out by 31 March 2026.

Key Objectives of the Reform:

  • Ensure continuity of revenue after the end of the GST compensation cess period.
  • Sustain high taxation on demerit goods to discourage consumption and support health priorities.
  • Direct tax proceeds toward public health and national security initiatives.
  • Help repay loans taken by the Centre during the COVID-19 pandemic to compensate states for revenue shortfalls.

When GST was rolled out in 2017, the Centre guaranteed states compensation for revenue losses, funded through a cess on luxury and sin goods. Though originally intended to last until 2022, the cess was extended to manage pandemic-related fiscal challenges. The new bills offer a more structured taxation framework for the coming years.

Archery Premier League Shines at India Sports Awards 2025

The Archery Premier League (APL) has emerged as a transformative force in Indian sport, winning the title of ‘Emerging Professional Sports Event of the Year’ at the India Sports Awards 2025 during the 15th Global Sports Summit (FICCI TURF 2025) in New Delhi.

Launched by the Archery Association of India (AAI), the APL is the world’s first professional franchise-based archery league. With its high-energy, broadcast-friendly format, the league has brought renewed visibility to archery—traditionally a niche Olympic sport—making it more accessible and engaging for a wider audience. The recognition highlights its successful inaugural season and its contribution to elevating India’s sports ecosystem.

India Finalizes $2 Billion Submarine Deal with Russia

India has concluded a significant defence agreement to lease a nuclear-powered submarine from Russia at an estimated cost of $2 billion. The finalisation of this long-discussed deal coincided with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to New Delhi.

This move strengthens India’s quest for a robust naval deterrent, especially in the strategically active Indian Ocean Region. India already possesses nuclear-capable submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs), allowing it to maintain a credible nuclear triad with delivery platforms from land, air, and sea.

Interest in nuclear-powered submarines is growing worldwide, with nations like Australia partnering with the UK and US under the AUKUS framework to build similar vessels. Presently, only a handful of countries — the US, UK, France, China, and Russia — possess the expertise to deploy and operate nuclear-powered submarines.
