International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation 2026

The International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is observed every year on 6 February to strengthen global efforts to eliminate this harmful practice. In 2026, the day once again draws attention to the urgent need to protect the rights, health, and dignity of women and girls worldwide.

Female Genital Mutilation includes procedures that deliberately alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons. It is widely recognised as a serious violation of human rights, reflecting deep-rooted gender inequality and discrimination against women and girls.

FGM offers no medical or health benefits. Instead, it can result in severe physical complications, psychological trauma, and long-term social consequences that affect victims throughout their lives. The practice also undermines efforts toward gender equality and sustainable development.

The 2026 theme, “Towards 2030: No End to FGM Without Sustained Commitment and Investment”, emphasises that eliminating FGM requires continuous political will, community engagement, adequate funding, and strong legal frameworks. The observance reinforces the global pledge to meet the UN Sustainable Development Goal target of ending FGM by 2030.

Airbus Inaugurates Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Aviation in India

In February 2026, global aerospace major Airbus inaugurated a Centre of Excellence (CoE) at Gati Shakti Vishwavidyalaya (GSV) in Vadodara, Gujarat. The initiative represents a major milestone in Airbus’s long-term collaboration with the university.

The Centre of Excellence aims to promote advanced research, innovation, and skill development in the aerospace sector. A key focus area is Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), which plays a crucial role in reducing carbon emissions from the aviation industry.

One of the most innovative research areas at the centre involves converting Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into Sustainable Aviation Fuel. This approach supports the concept of a circular economy, where waste materials are transformed into cleaner energy solutions.

The initiative aligns closely with India’s climate commitments and the global aviation industry’s goal of achieving long-term decarbonisation, while also nurturing skilled manpower for the future.

India and GCC Sign Terms of Reference for Free Trade Agreement

India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) have signed the Terms of Reference (ToR) to formally begin negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The move is expected to significantly influence trade, investment, and energy cooperation between the two sides.

The Terms of Reference serve as a structured roadmap for negotiations by clearly defining the scope, sectors, objectives, and negotiation process. This ensures transparency and prevents misunderstandings during discussions.

The GCC is among India’s largest trading partners. In FY 2024-25, bilateral trade stood at USD 178.56 billion, accounting for 15.42% of India’s total global trade. India’s exports to GCC countries were valued at USD 56.87 billion, while imports reached USD 121.68 billion.

Over the past five years, India-GCC trade has grown at an average annual rate of 15.3%, highlighting the strategic importance of the proposed FTA.
