International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict

Every year on November 6, the world observes the International Day for Preventing the Exploitation of the Environment in War and Armed Conflict, a United Nations–designated day highlighting the severe environmental consequences of warfare.

Wars not only cause human suffering but also leave long-lasting damage to nature — destroying ecosystems, contaminating water sources, and disrupting biodiversity. This observance reminds the global community that peace and environmental protection are deeply interconnected.

The initiative began when the UN General Assembly, through Resolution A/RES/56/4 on November 5, 2001, declared November 6 as the official observance day. Later, on May 27, 2016, the UN Environment Assembly (UNEA) reaffirmed this commitment through Resolution UNEP/EA.2/Res.15, emphasizing the need to safeguard the environment even during conflicts.

150 Years of Vande Mataram Celebration

India is celebrating 150 years of “Vande Mataram”, a national initiative honoring the song’s enduring contribution to the country’s freedom movement and patriotic spirit. On October 1, 2025, the Union Cabinet approved a nationwide campaign to connect citizens — especially students and youth — with the revolutionary ideals embedded in the song.

Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, born on June 26, 1838, in Kanthalpara village, Naihati (West Bengal), composed “Vande Mataram” in Sanskritised Bengali. The song was first published in his novel Anandamath (1882), which portrayed monks rising against colonial rule in pursuit of India’s freedom.

Some of Bankim Chandra’s notable works include:

  • Kapalkundala (1866)
  • Vishabriksha (The Poison Tree) (1873)
  • Anandamath (1882)
  • Devi Chaudhurani (1884)
  • Sitaram (1887)

“Vande Mataram” continues to symbolize the spirit of unity, courage, and devotion to the motherland.

India Ranks Third in Global Clean Industry Pipeline

India now holds the third position globally in the clean industrial project pipeline, following China and the United States. This achievement underscores India’s commitment to industrial decarbonization and sustainable growth.

With 65 commercial-scale low-emission projects planned across key sectors like steel, cement, chemicals, and aviation, the nation is making steady progress in its net-zero transition. However, only six projects have reached the final investment decision (FID) stage so far.

High-potential states leading this green industrial transformation include Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and Tamil Nadu.
