Santa Marta Climate Conference

Representatives from nearly 50 countries gathered in Santa Marta in April 2026 to discuss urgent global action against climate change and the growing dependence on fossil fuels. The Santa Marta Climate Conference emerged as an alternative platform to the traditional United Nations climate negotiations, aiming to encourage faster and stronger commitments toward clean energy transition.

The conference was jointly hosted by Colombia and Netherlands. Leaders and climate representatives expressed concern over the slow progress in existing international climate discussions conducted under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

The idea behind the conference developed due to increasing dissatisfaction among nations regarding the delayed implementation of climate goals and agreements. Participating countries emphasized the need for practical and immediate measures to reduce global carbon emissions and promote sustainable development.

The discussions at the conference focused on three major themes:

  • Reducing dependence on fossil fuels
  • Transforming global energy supply and demand systems
  • Strengthening international climate diplomacy

The summit highlighted the importance of international cooperation in addressing environmental challenges and accelerating the transition toward renewable energy sources.

NCERT Rolls Out PRASHAST 2.0

To strengthen inclusive education in India, National Council of Educational Research and Training launched PRASHAST 2.0, an upgraded digital screening platform designed to identify disabilities among school children at an early stage.

PRASHAST 2.0 is an improved version of the earlier system and aims to help teachers and schools detect learning and developmental difficulties more effectively. The initiative seeks to ensure that every child receives proper educational support and that no student is excluded from the learning process.

The full form of PRASHAST is Pre-Assessment Holistic Screening Tool. The platform enables teachers, principals, and special educators to screen children for 21 types of disabilities recognized under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016.

The primary objective of PRASHAST 2.0 is early detection of disabilities so that students can receive timely assistance, specialized teaching methods, and appropriate educational resources.

The platform follows a structured two-level screening process that allows both general teachers and trained professionals to participate efficiently in identifying developmental and learning challenges among students.

Legal Status to Vande Mataram

The iconic patriotic song Vande Mataram completed 150 years in 2025 since it was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in 1875.

Recently, the Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed granting Vande Mataram legal protection similar to India’s National Anthem, Jana Gana Mana. The proposal is expected to be implemented through amendments to the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act.

Vande Mataram played a significant role during India’s freedom struggle against British colonial rule. The song became a powerful symbol of nationalism, unity, and resistance, and it was widely sung by freedom fighters throughout the independence movement.

After India became a republic in 1950, the Constituent Assembly adopted Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem while granting Vande Mataram the status of National Song.
