World Pneumonia Day 2025

World Pneumonia Day is observed every year on 12 November to raise global awareness about pneumonia—a preventable yet life-threatening respiratory infection. The 2025 observance emphasizes the urgent need to strengthen healthcare systems, expand vaccine coverage, and ensure access to lifesaving treatments such as antibiotics and medical oxygen.

Despite being preventable, pneumonia remains the leading infectious cause of death among children under five worldwide. It also poses severe risks to older adults and individuals with chronic illnesses, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, including India.

The primary pathogens responsible for pneumonia include Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib), Streptococcus pneumoniae, and the Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends immunization with PCV (Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine), Hib, measles, and pertussis vaccines as vital preventive measures.

Early detection is crucial, and pulse oximetry—a simple, non-invasive device that measures oxygen saturation—plays an important role in timely diagnosis. Recognizing its critical role, WHO lists medical oxygen as an essential medicine, highlighting its importance in treating severe cases of pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses.
