Partition Horrors Remembrance Day 2026

Partition Horrors Remembrance Day, also known as Vibhajan Vibhishika Smriti Diwas, is observed on 14 August to remember the people who suffered during the Partition of India in 1947. The day honours those who lost their lives, homes and livelihoods, as well as those who were forced to leave their homes because of communal violence.

The Government of India declared 14 August as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day in 2021. The observance seeks to preserve the memory of the suffering associated with Partition and remind future generations of the human cost of communal violence.

The Partition of 1947 marked the end of British colonial rule and resulted in the creation of India and Pakistan. The process followed the June 3 Plan presented by Viceroy Lord Mountbatten, while the boundary between the two new dominions was determined by the Radcliffe Commission.

Gramin Gyan Setu App Launched in Gujarat

The Gramin Gyan Setu mobile application was launched on 12 August 2026 to digitally connect libraries in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar Lok Sabha constituency.

The launch coincided with National Library Day, which commemorates the birth anniversary of Padma Shri S. R. Ranganathan, a pioneer of library science in India.

The application follows a hub-and-spoke model, linking smaller village libraries with four central libraries. These central libraries collectively possess approximately 2.80 lakh books. According to the PPT, 752 libraries were interconnected within three months of system development.

The initial project covers 63 village libraries across the Gandhinagar, Kalol and Sanand assembly constituencies. Four mobile library vans, funded through the MPLAD grant, will visit villages every fortnight and deliver books requested through the application.

The digital repository includes books for children, competitive-examination preparation and subjects such as Indian and Gujarat history and the 1857 freedom struggle.
