Tirumala Hills & Erra Matti Dibbalu Added to UNESCO Tentative List

Two of Andhra Pradesh’s natural wonders — the Tirumala Hills and Erra Matti Dibbalu (Red Sand Dunes) near Visakhapatnam — have earned a place on the UNESCO Tentative List of World Heritage Sites.

  • Erra Matti Dibbalu, recognised as a National Geo-heritage Monument in 2016 by the Geological Survey of India, was first studied in 1886 by British geologist William King. The dunes’ deep red colour is a result of centuries of iron oxidation. Globally, only two other similar formations exist — in Sri Lanka and Tamil Nadu. These dunes provide valuable insights into ancient climate shifts and sea-level variations.
  • Tirumala Hills, home to the sacred Tirupati temple, are equally significant for housing the Eparchaean Unconformity, a rare geological phenomenon that reveals Earth’s billion-year-old evolutionary history.
