Vishwakarma Jayanti 2026
Vishwakarma Jayanti 2026 will be observed on Thursday, September 17, 2026. The festival is traditionally dedicated to Lord Vishwakarma, who is revered in Hindu tradition as the divine architect, craftsman and creator.
The occasion has a special significance for people whose professions involve technical skills, craftsmanship and the use of tools. Artisans, engineers, architects, craftsmen and industrial workers commonly observe the festival by worshipping their tools, machinery and workplaces.
Who is Lord Vishwakarma?
Lord Vishwakarma is regarded as the divine architect and master craftsman in Hindu tradition. He is associated with the creation of celestial structures, magnificent cities, palaces and divine weapons.
Traditional accounts associate Vishwakarma with the construction of Lanka, Dwarka and Indraprastha. He is also believed to have created several divine weapons, including Shiva’s Trishul, Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra and Indra’s Vajra. The Pushpaka Vimana is also traditionally attributed to him.
Connection with Kanya Sankranti
Vishwakarma Jayanti is observed on the same day as Kanya Sankranti, which marks the Sun’s entry into the zodiac sign Virgo (Kanya).
The festival therefore carries both religious and cultural significance and is particularly associated with skilled labour, creativity, engineering and craftsmanship.

Hyderabad Liberation Day 2026
Hyderabad Liberation Day is observed every year on September 17 to commemorate the integration of the erstwhile Hyderabad State into the Indian Union in 1948.
The day recalls the events surrounding Operation Polo, the military action launched on September 13, 1948, which resulted in the surrender of the Hyderabad State Forces on September 17.
Hyderabad at the Time of Independence
When India became independent in 1947, Hyderabad was the largest princely state in British India. It was ruled by Mir Osman Ali Khan, the Seventh Nizam of Hyderabad.
Following the end of British paramountcy, the Nizam sought to maintain Hyderabad as a separate entity rather than immediately becoming part of the Indian Union.
Standstill Agreement
India and Hyderabad entered into a Standstill Agreement on November 29, 1947. The agreement was intended to maintain the existing arrangements while negotiations continued.
However, political tensions within Hyderabad increased. The Razakars became an important force in the political turmoil, while the Telangana peasant struggle, which had begun in 1946, challenged the existing feudal structure.
Operation Polo
The situation eventually led to Operation Polo, which commenced on September 13, 1948.
The Hyderabad State Forces surrendered on September 17, 1948, marking the integration of Hyderabad into the Indian Union.
Reorganisation of Hyderabad State
The territorial structure of Hyderabad later changed following the States Reorganisation Act, 1956.
The Telugu-speaking region became part of Andhra Pradesh, while Marathi-speaking and Kannada-speaking areas were incorporated into neighbouring states.
The Telugu-speaking Telangana region subsequently witnessed a prolonged movement for separate statehood, with issues such as development, employment, education and safeguards forming part of the movement.
Finally, Telangana became a separate state on June 2, 2014.

PM Modi Inaugurates SEMICON India 2026
- PM Narendra Modi inaugurated SEMICON India 2026, the fifth edition of the event, at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi, India, on 17th September, heralding the start of a three-day event centered on the semiconductor and electronics ecosystem of India.
- The event will be held from 17th to 19th September and will see the gathering of semiconductor companies, policymakers, investors, research institutions, startups, academia and students.
- The event, which is organized by India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and SEMI, has been given the theme “Silicon to Systems: Building the Ecosystem.”
- India’s electronic manufacturing sector has seen much growth over the last decade.
- According to government figures, the production of electronics grew from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to ₹12 lakh crore in 2024-25.
- Exports of electronics grew from about ₹38,000 crore to ₹3.3 lakh crore in the period.
- Mobile phone production increased from ₹18,000 crore to ₹5.45 lakh crore, and mobile phone exports from ₹1,500 crore to ₹2 lakh crore.
- The Semicon India Programme was launched in the year 2022 to develop a comprehensive ecosystem of semiconductors in India. The scope of the programme includes designing, manufacturing, assembling, testing, packaging, and making modules of the semiconductor chips.
India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar Inaugurated in Sambalpur
- India’s 51st Doppler Weather Radar was inaugurated at Sambalpur in Odisha on 16 September 2026. The radar is located at Jamadarpali in Sambalpur and functions as a Make in India installation under Mission Mausam.
- A Doppler Weather Radar is a meteorological instrument that uses the Doppler effect to measure the movement of precipitation particles and wind within clouds. It is used for short-range weather monitoring, storm tracking, and rainfall estimation.
- The Sambalpur radar provides meteorological data within a 250 km radius and has a 150-metre resolution. The system updates observations every 10 minutes and is the third Doppler radar in Odisha after Paradip and Gopalpur.
- Mission Mausam is a Government of India initiative linked to the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The programme includes expansion of radar, satellite, and observation systems for weather and climate services.
- Union Minister of Earth Sciences Dr. Jitendra Singh stated that 40 to 50 more Doppler radars are planned across India under Mission Mausam. The target is to take the national radar network to nearly 100 radars within the next two years.
Sethuraman Panchanathan Wins 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award
- Sethuraman Panchanathan has been named the recipient of the 2026 Arthur M. Bueche Award by the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). The award will be presented on 4 October 2026 in Washington, D.C., during the 2026 NAE Annual Meeting.
- Panchanathan is the first Indian American and the first Arizonan to receive the award in its more than 40-year history.
