National Mathematics Day 2025

National Mathematics Day is observed across India every year on 22 December to honour the birth anniversary of Srinivasa Ramanujan, one of the finest mathematicians the country has ever produced. Born on 22 December 1887, Ramanujan’s life and work continue to inspire generations of learners and researchers.

The observance goes beyond paying tribute to an individual. It aims to strengthen mathematical awareness and promote analytical thinking among students. The day encourages young minds to develop interest in mathematics, foster logical reasoning, and appreciate the subject’s role in fields such as technology, space research, economics, and everyday problem-solving. It also highlights India’s long-standing mathematical legacy.

Recognising Ramanujan’s extraordinary and original contributions, the Government of India declared December 22 as National Mathematics Day in 2011. To further deepen public engagement with mathematics, 2012 was celebrated as the National Mathematics Year throughout the country.

Ramanujan is remembered for his pioneering work in number theory, infinite series, continued fractions, and mathematical analysis. Despite having minimal formal training, he independently arrived at nearly 3,900 mathematical results, many of which were later validated and found to be remarkably advanced for their time. His intuitive and unconventional approach remains a subject of admiration in the global mathematical community.

World Basketball Day 2025

World Basketball Day 2025 celebrates the evolution of basketball from a modest indoor activity into one of the world’s most widely followed sports. Observed annually on 21 December, the day marks the anniversary of the first basketball game played in 1891.

Acknowledging basketball’s international reach and cultural impact, the United Nations officially proclaimed World Basketball Day in 2023. The sport was invented in 1891 by James Naismith, a physical education instructor in the United States, who was asked to design a game suitable for indoor play during winter. Using a soccer ball and two peach baskets mounted on walls, Naismith laid the foundation for a sport that would later gain worldwide popularity.

The original version of basketball was vastly different from the modern game, but its core spirit of teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness remains unchanged.

Winter Solstice 2025

The Winter Solstice in 2025 falls on Sunday, 21 December, marking the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. On this day, many regions receive only eight to nine hours of daylight.

Although it often coincides with festive celebrations, the winter solstice is a significant astronomical event. It explains seasonal variations and signals the gradual increase in daylight after December.

The phenomenon occurs due to the Earth’s axial tilt of approximately 23.5 degrees, which causes different parts of the planet to receive varying sunlight throughout the year. A solstice occurs twice annually—once in June and once in December. The term originates from Latin, meaning “the Sun stands still,” referring to the brief pause in the Sun’s apparent movement before it reverses direction.

  • June Solstice: Longest day in the Northern Hemisphere
  • December Solstice: Shortest day in the Northern Hemisphere

World Meditation Day

The United Nations observed the second World Meditation Day on 21 December with a high-level event at its headquarters in New York. The occasion reaffirmed the growing global acceptance of meditation as a powerful tool for inner balance, mental well-being, and global harmony.

The event brought together diplomats, spiritual leaders, scientists, and representatives of civil society, underlining the universal relevance of mindfulness in a rapidly changing and conflict-prone world.

The programme was organised by the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, in collaboration with the missions of Andorra, Mexico, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. These nations collectively form the core group behind the World Meditation Day initiative.

Jay Shah Honoured with ‘Transformational Leader of the Year’ Award

At the NDTV Indian of the Year 2025, Jay Shah was conferred the ‘Transformational Leader of the Year’ award in recognition of his significant reforms in Indian and global cricket.

One of the most impactful changes under his leadership was the substantial increase in match fees for women cricketers, addressing long-standing pay disparities. Women players now earn ₹6 lakh per ODI, ₹3 lakh per T20I, and ₹15 lakh per Test match, a major improvement over previous remuneration.

Another milestone was the successful launch of the Women’s Premier League (WPL), which has played a crucial role in expanding opportunities and visibility for women in cricket.

Elon Musk Becomes the World’s First $700 Billion Individual

Tech entrepreneur Elon Musk made history by becoming the first individual globally to cross a net worth of $700 billion. According to the Forbes Billionaires Index, his wealth surged to approximately $749 billion following a key legal development.

On 20 December 2025, the Delaware Supreme Court overturned an earlier ruling and reinstated Musk’s massive Tesla stock options package, valued at $139 billion. The court held that the earlier rescission of the compensation package was unjustified.

Following the decision, Forbes removed the valuation discount applied to Musk’s holdings, adding nearly $70 billion to his personal wealth and firmly placing him beyond the $700 billion milestone.
