Kisan Diwas 2025: Honouring the Backbone of India

Kisan Diwas, also known as National Farmers Day, is observed every year across India on 23 December. The day commemorates the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister, who devoted his entire political life to the welfare of farmers and rural communities.

Born in 1902 into a peasant family, Chaudhary Charan Singh had a deep understanding of agrarian issues. His policies and ideas consistently focused on strengthening villages, improving agricultural productivity, and ensuring social justice for cultivators. Recognising his immense contribution, the Government of India officially declared 23 December as National Farmers Day in 2001.

His legacy includes strong support for land reforms, measures to reduce farmer indebtedness, and persistent efforts to empower small and marginal farmers. Kisan Diwas serves as a reminder of the vital role farmers play in sustaining India’s food security, economy, and social stability.

Ravi Deecee Honoured with Prestigious French Cultural Award

Renowned Malayalam publisher Ravi Deecee has been awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, one of France’s most respected civilian honours. The award recognises his exceptional contribution to literature, publishing, and cultural exchange, particularly in strengthening literary ties between India and France.

The honour was conferred by Thierry Mathou, the French Ambassador to India, who lauded Ravi Deecee’s role in transforming DC Books into one of India’s leading publishing houses. His efforts in introducing French literature to Indian readers, especially in the Malayalam language, were specially acknowledged.

Instituted in 1957, the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres is awarded to individuals who have significantly contributed to the promotion of arts and culture globally. It has three ranks—Chevalier, Officier, and Commandeur—with Ravi Deecee being inducted at the Chevalier level.

India to Introduce New CPI, GDP and IIP Data Series

The Government of India has announced a major overhaul of the country’s core macroeconomic indicators to better reflect the evolving economic structure. From February 2026, new data series for Consumer Price Index (CPI) and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) will be introduced, followed by a revised Index of Industrial Production (IIP) in May 2026.

Such base-year revisions are a global statistical practice, necessary to account for changing consumption patterns, the rise of new industries, technological advancements, and improved data collection methods. Under the new framework, CPI will adopt 2024 as its base year, while GDP and IIP will use 2022–23.

The revision aims to enhance data accuracy, ensure international comparability, and provide policymakers with a more realistic picture of India’s economic performance.

India Tops WADA Global Doping Offenders List Again

For the third consecutive year, India has topped the global doping offenders list released by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). In 2024, India recorded 260 positive doping cases, making it the only country to cross the triple-digit mark.

India’s positivity rate stood at 3.6%, the highest among nations conducting more than 5,000 tests. In comparison, France reported 91 violations, Russia 76, and China just 43 positives despite testing over 24,000 samples. China’s positivity rate was a mere 0.2%, while the United States recorded 1.1%.

These figures suggest that India’s problem goes beyond testing capacity and points to a deeper issue of systemic misuse of performance-enhancing substances. The trend raises concerns about India’s sporting credibility and could impact its ambitions, including the bid to host the 2036 Olympic Games.

WADA, headquartered in Canada, is an international body co-founded by the International Olympic Committee and over 140 governments, tasked with combating doping in sports worldwide.

India and New Zealand Conclude Free Trade Agreement Talks

India and New Zealand have successfully concluded negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA), marking a major milestone in bilateral relations. The completion of talks within nine months reflects strong political will and shared economic objectives.

A key feature of the agreement is the reduction or elimination of tariffs on 95% of New Zealand’s exports to India. The FTA aims to improve market access, promote investment flows, and support MSMEs, farmers, students, entrepreneurs, and innovators in both countries.

New Zealand has projected that the agreement could boost its exports to India by $1.1 to $1.3 billion annually over the next 20 years, significantly deepening economic engagement.

India–Netherlands Cooperation for Lothal Maritime Heritage

India has partnered with the Netherlands to develop the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) at Lothal, Gujarat, through a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding. This initiative seeks to showcase India’s ancient maritime traditions on a global platform.

Lothal, a prominent site of the Indus Valley Civilisation, is believed to house one of the world’s oldest dockyards, dating back nearly 4,500 years. The NMHC, being developed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, aims to present India’s maritime history, trade routes, shipbuilding expertise, and coastal culture in a modern, interactive format.

The project is expected to boost cultural tourism, generate employment, create research opportunities, and enhance India’s soft power through cultural diplomacy, positioning Gujarat as a global maritime heritage hub.
