Olympic Day 2026

Olympic Day is celebrated worldwide every year on 23 June to promote sports, fitness, friendship, and the values of the Olympic Movement. The occasion inspires people of all age groups to participate in physical activities and adopt healthier lifestyles, regardless of their athletic abilities.

The day commemorates the establishment of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on 23 June 1894 in Paris. It serves as a reminder of the enduring spirit of the Olympic Games and their role in bringing people together across cultures and nations.

The theme for Olympic Day 2026 is “Sport: Building Bridges, Breaking Barriers.” The theme emphasizes the power of sports to foster unity, mutual understanding, and social inclusion.

The modern Olympic Movement was revived through the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, whose vision led to the organization of the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, in 1896. Since then, Olympic Day has become a global celebration of participation, excellence, and international cooperation.

Nobel Prize-Winning Physicist François Englert Passes Away at 93

Renowned Belgian theoretical physicist François Englert, who shared the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physics, passed away at the age of 93 in Uccle, near Brussels.

Born on 6 November 1932 in Etterbeek, Belgium, Englert pursued his studies at the Free University of Brussels and earned his doctorate in physics in 1959. He made groundbreaking contributions to particle physics, particularly in understanding how elementary particles acquire mass.

In 1964, François Englert and physicist Robert Brout proposed a theory involving spontaneous symmetry breaking in quantum field theory. Around the same time, Peter Higgs independently developed a similar concept. Together, these ideas formed the basis of the Brout–Englert–Higgs mechanism.

This theory explains how particles obtain mass through interactions with an all-pervasive field, leading to the prediction of the Higgs boson. The existence of the Higgs boson was experimentally confirmed at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in 2012, providing strong support for the Standard Model of particle physics.

For this revolutionary work, Englert and Peter Higgs were jointly awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2013.

SEBI Introduces GARUDA Framework for Alternative Investment Funds

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has approved a new regulatory framework called GARUDA (Green-Channel: AIF Rollout Upon Document Acknowledgement) for Alternative Investment Funds (AIFs). The framework was introduced through amendments to the SEBI (Alternative Investment Funds) Regulations, 2012.

Alternative Investment Funds are privately pooled investment vehicles regulated by SEBI and categorized into Category I, Category II, and Category III based on their investment objectives and regulatory treatment.

The GARUDA framework significantly streamlines the launch process for AIF schemes. Under the new system, the approval timeline for regular AIF schemes has been reduced from approximately 30 days to just 10 working days.

For schemes exclusively meant for accredited investors and Angel Funds, launches can commence immediately after document acknowledgment by SEBI. Additionally, these schemes are no longer required to submit Private Placement Memorandums through SEBI-registered merchant bankers. Instead, compliance responsibility will rest with the AIF manager’s Chief Executive Officer and Compliance Officer through internal regulatory undertakings.

The initiative is expected to improve ease of doing business and enhance efficiency within India’s alternative investment ecosystem.
