Cabinet Clears MSP for Raw Jute for 2026–27
The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for raw jute for the 2026–27 marketing season.
The MSP for Raw Jute (TD-3 grade) has been fixed at ₹5,925 per quintal, reflecting an increase of ₹275 per quintal over the previous season. The revised MSP ensures a 61.8% return over the all-India weighted average cost of production, in line with the government’s 2018–19 Budget commitment of fixing MSP at least 1.5 times the production cost.
Since 2014–15, the MSP for raw jute has risen from ₹2,400 per quintal to ₹5,925 per quintal — an increase of ₹3,525 per quintal, representing a 2.5-fold rise. The government highlighted that between 2014–15 and 2025–26, around ₹1,342 crore was disbursed to jute farmers as MSP support, compared to ₹441 crore during 2004–05 to 2013–14. This reflects enhanced financial backing for jute cultivators.

The initiative aims to modernise governance through secure and efficient digital infrastructure.
Approval for Renaming Kerala as “Keralam”
The Union Cabinet has approved a proposal to change the name of the State of Kerala to “Keralam.” The move follows a resolution adopted by the State Legislative Assembly on June 24, 2024, seeking formal alteration of the State’s name under Article 3 of the Constitution.
As per the constitutional process, the President will refer the Kerala (Alteration of Name) Bill, 2026 to the State Assembly for its views. After considering the Assembly’s opinion, the Central Government may introduce the Bill in Parliament, subject to the President’s recommendation.
India Remains Second-Largest Buyer of Russian Fuels
India retained its position as the world’s second-largest purchaser of Russian fossil fuels in January 2026, importing energy worth €2.2 billion ($2.59 billion), according to data from the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air (CREA).
Break-up of imports:
- Crude oil: €2 billion (78% share)
- Coal: €442 million
- Oil products: €30 million
Although imports have fallen by 23% since November, India remains behind only China in Russian fuel purchases. China, in contrast, increased its imports by 29% in the past two months, with crude oil imports reaching €4 billion in January.
The data indicates that discounted Russian oil continues to play a significant role in India’s energy security strategy, even as global sanctions and trade shifts reshape supply patterns.
India’s Carbon Trading Programme Nears Launch
India is in the final stages of rolling out its first comprehensive carbon trading framework — the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme (CCTS). The initiative is being coordinated by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE).
The scheme will operate for the period April 2025 to March 2026 and aims to regulate industrial greenhouse gas emissions. Under the compliance-based system:
- Industries will receive specific emission targets.
- Entities emitting below their cap will earn tradable carbon credits.
- Those exceeding limits must buy credits or face penalties.
This programme represents a major milestone in India’s climate governance efforts and aligns with its long-term sustainability commitments.
