International Data Privacy Day 2026: Safeguarding Digital India

International Data Privacy Day 2026 is being observed at a crucial moment as India’s digital ecosystem functions at an unprecedented population scale. With the rapid expansion of online platforms and digital services, protecting personal data has become a national priority. The Government of India has highlighted significant legal and financial steps, including the Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act, 2023, the newly notified DPDP Rules, 2025, and a dedicated allocation of ₹782 crore for cybersecurity in the Union Budget 2025–26.

International Data Privacy Day has been celebrated since 2006, following an initiative by the Council of Europe to commemorate the signing of Convention 108, the world’s first legally binding international treaty on data protection. The day aims to spread awareness about privacy rights and responsible handling of personal information in an increasingly digital world.

For citizens, the occasion reinforces the importance of digital rights and informed online behaviour. For governments and institutions, it underscores the need for transparent, secure and accountable data governance systems.

India currently stands as the world’s third-largest digitalised economy, with more than 101.7 crore broadband users spending close to 1,000 minutes online every day. Affordable data rates have enabled the widespread use of platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI, MyGov and e-Sanjeevani, revolutionising governance and service delivery. However, this vast scale also heightens concerns around cyber fraud, data leaks and misuse, making robust privacy frameworks essential.

France Moves to Ban Social Media Access for Children Under 15

France has taken a strong step toward child online safety as its National Assembly approved a bill banning children below the age of 15 from using social media platforms. The French government aims to enforce the law before the upcoming academic year.

The proposed legislation restricts under-15 users from accessing social media platforms and embedded social networking features. It applies to major global platforms such as Facebook and Instagram (Meta), YouTube (Alphabet), TikTok and Snapchat. The bill mandates strict age-verification mechanisms in line with European Union regulations.

Additionally, the law expands existing smartphone bans in schools to cover high schools as well. The bill was passed with a decisive vote of 116 in favour and 23 against and will now be reviewed by the French Senate.

Uttarakhand Implements Uniform Civil Code Reforms

The Uttarakhand government has brought into force the Uniform Civil Code (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026, following approval by the Governor. This move strengthens and clarifies the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state.

Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to implement the UCC on January 27, 2025, marking a significant development in India’s legal framework. The code standardised laws related to marriage, divorce and live-in relationships across all communities while introducing digital processes for greater efficiency.

Promulgated under Article 213 of the Constitution of India, the 2026 ordinance introduces procedural, administrative and penal changes to the existing UCC Act, 2024. The reforms focus on women’s empowerment, protection of children’s rights and equality before the law. Simplification of procedures to reduce delays and enhance transparency remains a key objective.

ASI Begins Excavation at Iron Age Burial Site in Tamil Nadu

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), through its Excavation Branch–VI based in Mysuru, has initiated an excavation at an Iron Age burial site in Kamanur near Kodaikanal, located in the lower Palani hills of Dindigul district, Tamil Nadu.

This excavation forms part of a three-year research project that will cover multiple archaeological locations across the Palani hills. According to ASI officials, the region contains diverse burial structures such as cists, dolmens, urn burials and pit burials. The discovery of a burial complex during vegetation clearance led to the decision to undertake systematic excavation.

The Palani hills have been studied since the colonial era, with several Iron Age sites previously identified and explored. Archaeologists believe the Kamanur site holds significant potential to provide insights into the cultural practices and lifestyle of communities that lived in the region over 3,000 years ago.

Lorenzo Musetti Retires, Djokovic Reaches Australian Open Semifinal

In a dramatic quarter-final match at the Australian Open 2026, Novak Djokovic advanced to his 13th semifinal appearance in Melbourne after Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti was forced to retire mid-match.

Musetti delivered an outstanding performance, winning the first two sets 6-4, 6-3 and pushing the 10-time Australian Open champion to the brink of a major upset. However, physical exhaustion and injury issues hampered the 23-year-old in the third set, ultimately leading to his retirement and allowing Djokovic to progress.

Sophie Devine Tops WPL 2026 Purple Cap Standings

The star all-rounder claimed 4 wickets for 37 runs, earning the Player-of-the-Match award and taking her tally to 15 wickets for the season.

Delhi Capitals’ Nandani Sharma slipped to second place with 14 wickets despite maintaining an impressive record of picking up at least one wicket in every match. Her earlier 5-for-33 remains one of the two five-wicket hauls this season, alongside Shreyanka Patil of Royal Challengers Bengaluru.
