A unique volunteer initiative in the Czech Republic, dubbed “A Gift for Putin,” has successfully garnered significant support to aid Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia. Launched in November 2023, this campaign has managed to raise an impressive 72.3 million koruna, equivalent to approximately $2.9 million, thanks to contributions from over 20,500 donors.
Despite its provocative name, the initiative aims to bolster Ukraine’s military capabilities by funding the purchase of a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter, which is set to enhance the country’s war efforts. According to the campaign’s website, the need for such military support is critical, emphasizing that “Ukraine cannot win the war with drones or ammunition alone.” The statement underlines the importance of advanced military hardware like tanks, aircraft, howitzers, and helicopters for special operations to effectively counter the ongoing threats posed by invading forces.
The helicopter is scheduled to be delivered later this month, and once it arrives, it will be utilized by Ukraine’s military intelligence unit. Its primary roles will include transporting soldiers and evacuating casualties, missions that are essential in the current combat environment.
The UH-60 Black Hawk is celebrated for its versatility; this twin-engine rotorcraft is equipped to handle a range of tasks from troop transport to supply delivery and search-and-rescue missions, even under contested conditions. With an impressive payload capacity of 9,000 pounds (4,082 kilograms), it can accommodate up to 12 fully-equipped soldiers along with additional loads, making it a valuable asset on the battlefield. Furthermore, its operational characteristics, such as a top speed of 290 kilometers per hour (180 miles per hour) and an operational range of 370 miles (595 kilometers), enhance its capability to operate effectively in diverse scenarios.
The urgency surrounding the acquisition of the Black Hawk is captured in the rallying cry of the campaign: “Let’s finish what we started together and send Chestmir to fight against the dark Empire.” This initiative marks a notable moment in international solidarity and military support, as the Czech Republic stands out as the first country where citizens have collectively raised funds specifically to finance a new helicopter for the Ukrainian military, reflecting a strong commitment to supporting Ukraine in its struggle for sovereignty.
