The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, has granted Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for various capital acquisition proposals valued at approximately ₹3.60 lakh crore. This landmark decision, made on February 12, 2026, represents one of the most significant clearances aimed at bolstering the combat readiness of India’s armed forces.

### Enhancements for the Indian Air Force

As part of the acquisitions approved for the Indian Air Force, the DAC authorized the procurement of Multi Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA), advanced combat missiles, and an Air-Ship Based High Altitude Pseudo Satellite (AS-HAPS). The MRFA initiative is expected to greatly enhance the IAF’s air superiority and long-range strike capabilities, thereby improving deterrent capabilities. A significant portion of these aircraft will be produced domestically, aligning with the government’s push for indigenization. The newly sanctioned combat missiles are designed to strengthen the IAF’s ground attack capabilities with deep-strike reach and high precision. Meanwhile, the AS-HAPS platform aims to provide persistent intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR), as well as electronic intelligence and remote sensing for military operations.

### Upgrades for the Indian Army

For the Indian Army, the DAC approved AoN for acquiring Anti-Tank Mines (Vibhav) and the refurbishment of existing vehicle platforms, particularly Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARVs), T-72 main battle tanks, and BMP-II infantry combat vehicles. The Vibhav mines are intended to create anti-tank obstacle systems that will help delay and disrupt advancing enemy mechanized forces. Additionally, overhauling these armoured platforms will extend their service life and maintain the operational effectiveness of frontline units.

### Developments for the Indian Navy

The DAC also granted AoN for the Indian Navy, which includes a 4 MW Marine Gas Turbine-based Electric Power Generator and extra P-8I Long Range Maritime Reconnaissance aircraft. The new power generator will be developed under the Make-I category of the Defence Acquisition Procedure 2020, aimed at reducing reliance on foreign suppliers and bolstering self-reliance in naval power generation. The addition of more P-8I aircraft is expected to significantly enhance the Navy’s capabilities in long-range anti-submarine warfare, maritime surveillance, and strike operations.

### Strengthening the Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard has also seen advancements, with AoN being awarded for Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) systems for Dornier aircraft. This enhancement will significantly improve maritime surveillance and monitoring capabilities, thereby fortifying coastal and offshore security.

### Strategic Implications

Officials indicated that these approvals underscore the government’s commitment to rapid capability upgrades, indigenization, and overall readiness across all branches of the armed forces and the Coast Guard. The comprehensive range of programs—encompassing fighters, missiles, armored systems, maritime patrol aircraft, and surveillance technologies—highlights a robust momentum toward India’s military modernization and the growth of its domestic defense manufacturing sector. The approval of the ₹3.60 lakh crore AoN is seen as a strategic move to enhance national security and operational effectiveness across the board.
