Delivery of INS Mahendragiri Strengthens Naval Power
The Indian Navy received INS Mahendragiri, the sixth warship under the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A), on 30 April 2026. Built by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited in Mumbai, this advanced frigate represents a major step forward in India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
Project 17A frigates are designed as multi-role platforms capable of tackling both present and future maritime threats. Compared to the earlier Shivalik-class frigate, these ships incorporate improved stealth features, superior firepower, enhanced automation, and better survivability.
The vessel operates on a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system and is equipped with a Controllable Pitch Propeller and an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS). With nearly 75% indigenous content, INS Mahendragiri highlights India’s growing self-reliance in warship design and construction under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
🪖 Lt Gen Balbir Singh Takes Command of Chinar Corps

Lieutenant General Balbir Singh has assumed command of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, a key formation responsible for security operations in Jammu and Kashmir.
With over 34 years of service, Lt Gen Singh brings extensive operational experience, particularly in counter-insurgency and counter-infiltration missions across Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast. Upon taking charge, he paid tribute at the Chinar War Memorial, honoring fallen soldiers.
He has previously led the Counter Insurgency Force (Victor) in South Kashmir and emphasized collaboration with civil authorities and local communities to promote peace, stability, and development in the region.
🚀 India Tests Long-Range Hypersonic Anti-Ship Missile
India has successfully conducted a test of its Phase-II long-range hypersonic anti-ship missile, marking a significant advancement in next-generation military technology. Developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation, the missile incorporates a two-stage hypersonic glide vehicle.
During the trial, the missile accurately struck a target at a distance of approximately 1,500 km, significantly extending India’s maritime strike capability. Designed for the Indian Navy, the system can engage both stationary and moving targets at sea.
The missile reaches speeds up to Mach 10 during its boost phase and maintains around Mach 5 while gliding. Its ability to carry different payloads enhances flexibility in combat scenarios, making it a critical asset for future naval warfare.
⚡ OleeSpace Develops India’s First Private Directed Energy Weapon
Pune-based startup OleeSpace has reportedly delivered India’s first privately developed Directed Energy Weapon (DEW) to the Indian Army.
This compact 2-kilowatt laser system is mounted on an unmanned ground vehicle and is designed for close combat, perimeter security, and anti-drone operations. The AI-enabled platform can identify, track, and engage multiple targets autonomously.
The system can disable or damage threats within seconds, offering rapid response capabilities in complex combat environments. This development highlights the growing role of private sector innovation in India’s defence ecosystem.
🌍 Iran Expands Strategic Control Over Key Maritime Routes
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has announced new regulations aimed at strengthening its control over waters along its southern coast, including the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz.
The IRGC Navy stated that it intends to oversee nearly 2,000 km of coastline in the Arabian Gulf region. These measures are positioned as efforts to enhance regional security and economic stability.
Statements from Iranian leadership also emphasized reducing external influence in the region, highlighting ongoing geopolitical tensions and the strategic importance of maritime chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz for global energy trade.
