16th Aero India to Be Held in Bengaluru
The 16th edition of Aero India is scheduled to take place at Air Force Station Yelahanka, Bengaluru, Karnataka, from 8 to 12 February 2027. Aero India is one of the world’s major aerospace and defence exhibitions and provides a platform for India and international partners to showcase aviation, defence technology and emerging capabilities.
The event is organised by the Department of Defence Production under the Ministry of Defence. It is expected to bring together defence companies, armed forces, policymakers, technology specialists, innovators and other industry stakeholders.
Importance of Aero India 2027
The five-day event will feature exhibitions, technology demonstrations, business meetings and strategic interactions. It will facilitate:
- Industry-to-industry cooperation
- Government-industry engagement
- Technology exchange
- International defence cooperation
- Aerospace and defence business opportunities
Aero India also supports India’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative by highlighting indigenous defence manufacturing and India’s growing position in the international aerospace supply chain.
Surgeon Vice Admiral Dilip Raghavan Becomes DG Hospital Services
Surgeon Vice Admiral Dilip Raghavan, VSM assumed the appointment of Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces) on 1 September 2026.
He joined the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC), Pune, in 1985 and completed his MBBS in 1989. He was subsequently commissioned into the Indian Navy on 26 December 1989.
During his career, he served in several important medical and command positions, including Command Medical Officer of Southern Naval Command and Eastern Naval Command. He also served as the Commanding Officer of INHS Asvini, Mumbai. During his tenure, INHS Asvini received the Raksha Mantri Trophy for Best Command Hospital.
For his distinguished service, he was awarded the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM) on 26 January 2026.
IAF Tests Indigenous Khagantak-243 Glide Bomb
The Indian Air Force successfully conducted a drop trial of the indigenously developed Khagantak-243, marking an important development in India’s indigenous precision-strike capabilities.
The IAF had previously placed an order for the weapon with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), although the quantity and financial details of the contract have not been disclosed.
Who Developed Khagantak-243?
The weapon has been developed jointly by:
- JSR Dynamics
- Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL)
JSR Dynamics contributed the bomb body and control systems, while BEL provided the electronic and guidance-related subsystems.
Key Features
Khagantak-243 is a 300-kg-class, long-range, stand-off precision-guided glide bomb.
Unlike a conventional free-fall bomb, a glide bomb uses aerodynamic surfaces and control systems to travel towards its target after being released from an aircraft. This allows the launching aircraft to engage targets without necessarily flying directly over them.
The development reflects India’s increasing emphasis on Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence technology.
ISRO’s EOS-05 Imaging Satellite Mission
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is scheduled to launch EOS-05, also referred to as Gisat-1A, aboard the GSLV-F17 mission from Sriharikota at 2:55 am on 4 September.
The satellite is designed to operate in geosynchronous orbit at around 36,000 km above Earth. Its position will allow it to repeatedly observe the same broad region rather than relying only on short-duration passes over an area.
Strategic and Civilian Applications
The persistent observation capability could assist in monitoring:
- Remote border regions
- Strategic installations
- Severe weather events
- Environmental changes
- Other areas across the Indian subcontinent
The satellite is intended to have both civilian and military applications.
Most Indian Earth-observation satellites, including the Cartosat and Risat series, generally operate in low Earth orbit. In contrast, a geosynchronous satellite can remain aligned with a particular region because its orbital motion corresponds closely with Earth’s rotation.
Yudh Abhyas 2026
Yudh Abhyas is the major annual bilateral Army exercise conducted by India and the United States. The 2026 edition is the 22nd edition of the exercise.
The exercise has been conducted since 2004 under the sponsorship of US Army Pacific. Its primary objective is to improve military interoperability and strengthen cooperation between the Indian and US armies.
The exercise forms part of the broader India-US defence partnership and contributes to cooperation in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Previous Edition
The 21st edition involved around 450 personnel. Indian troops from the Madras Regiment trained alongside soldiers of the US Army’s 1st Battalion, 5th Infantry Regiment, known as the “Bobcats.”
The 21st edition commenced at Fort Wainwright, Alaska, on 1 September and continued until 14 September.
Pilot Abhinandan Varthaman Retires From IAF
Former Indian Air Force fighter pilot Abhinandan Varthaman has reportedly taken premature retirement from the IAF after approximately 22 years of service and moved into commercial aviation. The report states that he joined Goa-based regional airline FLY91 as a pilot.
He was a Vir Chakra awardee. The gallantry award was conferred on him in 2019 in recognition of his actions during the aerial confrontation between India and Pakistan.
2019 Aerial Engagement
During the February 2019 India-Pakistan military confrontation, Varthaman was flying a MiG-21 Bison. He was captured after his aircraft was shot down and remained in Pakistani custody for three days before being released on 1 March 2019.
His actions during the aerial engagement subsequently earned him the Vir Chakra, India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award.
