Defence Ministry Signs ₹1,476 Crore Contract with BEL
In a significant move to enhance the Indian Army’s electronic warfare capabilities, the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹1,476 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). The agreement covers the procurement of five advanced ground-based mobile electronic warfare systems designed to strengthen military operations in the electromagnetic spectrum.
The procurement falls under the Buy (Indian–Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category and mandates at least 72% indigenous content. This reflects India’s commitment to promoting domestic defence manufacturing under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
These systems are capable of detecting, monitoring, intercepting, and disrupting enemy communication networks, radar systems, and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). They provide a “soft kill” capability by neutralizing hostile drones through signal jamming and interference with navigation systems.
The mobility of these platforms allows commanders to deploy them quickly in both offensive and defensive operations, ensuring continuous electronic warfare support on dynamic battlefields.
Unrest in Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir
Serious unrest has erupted in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir following violent clashes between protesters and security personnel. Reports indicate that more than thirty people lost their lives, while around two hundred others sustained injuries during the disturbances.
The tensions escalated after authorities banned the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC), a civil society organization that had been actively raising economic and political issues in the region. Officials justified the ban on grounds of maintaining public order and security.
The violence intensified in Rawalakot after the death of a local trader during a confrontation with security forces. The incident triggered widespread protests, leading to clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement agencies.
While official figures reported a limited number of casualties, local residents and supporters of JAAC claimed that the actual toll was significantly higher. The events have drawn attention to the ongoing political and social tensions in the region.
Combined Graduation Parade at Air Force Academy
The Combined Graduation Parade (CGP) of the 217th Course is scheduled to take place at the Air Force Academy on 13 June 2026.
The ceremony marks the successful completion of pre-commissioning training for flight cadets from various branches of the Indian Air Force. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will serve as the Reviewing Officer for the event.
During the parade, graduating cadets will receive the President’s Commission, while successful trainees will also be awarded Wings and Brevets. The ceremony will include officers and trainees from the Indian Air Force, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
A historic highlight of this year’s parade is the commissioning of the first batch of women cadets from the National Defence Academy (NDA), marking a major milestone in the evolution of military training in India.
Defence Ministry Approves First Large-Scale Solar Power Project
In a landmark initiative aimed at promoting renewable energy and enhancing energy security, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has approved the establishment of a 250 MW solar power project integrated with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
The project will be developed on approximately 850 acres of vacant defence land at Sitapur in Uttar Pradesh. It is the first large-scale solar energy project to be undertaken by the Ministry of Defence on defence-owned land.
The initiative seeks to reduce dependence on conventional power sources while ensuring a stable energy supply for defence establishments. It is also expected to lower long-term electricity costs and generate significant savings for the government.
Implementation of the project has been entrusted to NTPC Limited through a competitive bidding process. The project represents a unique blend of national security, sustainable development, technological advancement, and environmental responsibility.
Government Reviews Delays in Tejas Mk1A Deliveries
The Ministry of Defence is examining possible action against Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) due to delays in the delivery of Tejas Mk1A fighter aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The issue was discussed during a high-level review meeting chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Despite receiving several engines from GE Aerospace and having aircraft structures ready, HAL has not yet delivered any Tejas Mk1A aircraft to the IAF.
Officials noted that while delays in engine supplies from GE Aerospace contributed to the situation, HAL was expected to have delivered at least some aircraft once engines became available.
The Indian Air Force has already placed orders for 180 Tejas aircraft through two major contracts—83 aircraft ordered in 2021 and an additional 97 aircraft ordered later. The government has directed HAL to adhere to committed timelines and accelerate production to meet operational requirements.
The Tejas Mk1A programme remains a crucial component of India’s efforts to modernize its air force and strengthen indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
