Indian Army Plans Additional Procurement of K9 Vajra Artillery Guns
The Indian Army is considering the acquisition of around 300 additional K9 Vajra-T self-propelled artillery guns to further enhance its long-range firepower capabilities. If approved, this procurement would become one of the largest artillery modernization projects undertaken by the Army in recent decades.
The journey of the K9 Vajra in India began in 2017 when the Army signed a contract worth nearly ₹4,500 crore for 100 guns. These systems were delivered successfully by 2021. Subsequently, the Ministry of Defence placed another order for 100 guns in December 2023 at an estimated cost of ₹7,600 crore.
Designed for rapid mobility and long-range artillery support, the K9 Vajra-T has proven effective on both the western borders and the northern frontiers. The system has also undergone successful cold-weather trials in the high-altitude conditions of Ladakh, demonstrating its operational versatility in challenging terrains.
Originally derived from South Korea’s K9 Thunder platform, the K9 Vajra-T is manufactured in India by Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Approval of the proposed order would take total production beyond 500 units, significantly boosting India’s indigenous defence manufacturing capabilities.
Ministry of Defence Signs ₹449 Crore Contract for Advanced GNSS Jammers
In another major step toward defence modernization, the Ministry of Defence has signed a ₹449 crore agreement with Bengaluru-based Accord Software and Systems Private Limited for the supply of 20 Enhanced Capability Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Jammers to the Indian Navy.
The contract falls under the Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed and Manufactured) category and includes a minimum indigenous content of 75 percent. The agreement was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.
These advanced systems are designed to disrupt enemy satellite navigation capabilities by degrading signal acquisition and tracking functions. They can also conduct signal spoofing and deceptive jamming operations, providing enhanced protection to naval assets operating in complex threat environments.
The project strengthens India’s maritime security framework while supporting the government’s Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives through indigenous technological development.
India Achieves Quantum Computing Milestone with ‘Kaveri’ Processor
India has entered an elite group of technologically advanced nations with the development of its most powerful indigenous quantum processor, named Kaveri.
The breakthrough was achieved by Bengaluru-based start-up QpiAI, which successfully developed a 64-qubit superconducting quantum processor. This accomplishment places India among a select group of countries capable of designing and manufacturing advanced quantum computing systems.
A key highlight of the achievement is that the processor surpasses the globally recognized 50-qubit benchmark, a threshold at which quantum computers begin demonstrating advantages over conventional computers for certain specialized tasks.
The Kaveri processor is expected to contribute significantly to fields such as:
- Cryptography and cybersecurity
- Artificial Intelligence
- Drug discovery and healthcare research
- Materials science
- Complex optimization problems
The development showcases India’s growing strength in frontier technologies and reinforces Bengaluru’s position as a global innovation hub.
India Expresses Gratitude to Oman for Rescue of Indian Seafarers
India has thanked Oman for its prompt assistance in rescuing 24 Indian crew members aboard the tanker MT Marivex following a maritime emergency near the Omani coast.
The Palau-flagged vessel reportedly caught fire after being struck during a security operation linked to attempts to breach restrictions involving Iranian ports. The incident occurred near Masirah Island in Oman.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), all 24 Indian nationals were safely evacuated without injuries. The Indian Embassy in Muscat worked closely with Omani authorities throughout the rescue operation.
The episode highlights the increasing security challenges faced by commercial vessels operating in the Gulf region, particularly around the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy transportation.
Tata-Airbus Conduct First Test Flight of India-Made C295 Transport Aircraft
India’s aerospace manufacturing sector achieved a historic milestone as Tata Advanced Systems Limited and Airbus successfully conducted the first test flight of the first India-manufactured C295 military transport aircraft from the Final Assembly Line facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.
The aircraft is the first among 40 C295 transport aircraft that will be produced in India under a landmark defence collaboration between Tata and Airbus. The programme represents the first instance of a military aircraft being manufactured in India by the private sector.
The successful test flight marks an important stage in the aircraft’s certification and production process. Senior Indian Air Force officials, including Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar Bharti, have reviewed the project’s progress.
The C295 aircraft will replace the ageing Avro-748 fleet of the Indian Air Force. It is designed for multiple missions, including:
- Troop transportation
- Cargo delivery
- Medical evacuation
- Humanitarian assistance
- Special operations
The Final Assembly Line facility was inaugurated in October 2024 in Vadodara. Under the programme, more than 85 percent of the aircraft’s structural and assembly work will be carried out in India. The project also involves manufacturing approximately 13,000 aircraft components domestically and has integrated dozens of Indian suppliers into the production ecosystem.
This initiative represents a major boost to India’s aerospace industry and aligns with the country’s vision of becoming a global hub for defence manufacturing.
Conclusion
Recent developments in defence technology, military modernization, quantum computing, and aerospace manufacturing reflect India’s growing emphasis on self-reliance and technological advancement. From expanding artillery capabilities and strengthening naval defence systems to achieving breakthroughs in quantum computing and aircraft production, these initiatives demonstrate the nation’s commitment to enhancing both its strategic preparedness and innovation ecosystem.
