Successful Flight-Test of Advanced Agni Missile

India successfully carried out the flight-test of an advanced Agni missile equipped with Multiple Independently Targeted Re-Entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology from Dr APJ Abdul Kalam Island on May 08, 2026. The missile demonstrated the capability to carry multiple payloads and strike different targets spread across a large area in the Indian Ocean Region.

During the mission, several ground-based and ship-based telemetry stations monitored and tracked the missile’s trajectory from launch to the impact of all payloads. The successful completion of the test confirmed that all mission objectives were achieved accurately.

This achievement marks another important advancement in India’s strategic defence capability, as the MIRV system allows a single missile to engage multiple targets independently. The missile has been developed by Defence Research and Development Organisation with support from Indian industries and was witnessed by senior DRDO scientists and personnel of the Indian Army.

Major Progress in Hypersonic Missile Technology

India also achieved a significant breakthrough in hypersonic missile technology through the efforts of the Defence Research and Development Laboratory under DRDO.

The development involved an advanced supersonic air-breathing engine powered by an indigenously developed liquid hydrocarbon endothermic fuel. Scientists also used high-temperature thermal barrier coatings and modern manufacturing technologies to improve engine performance.

Ground tests conducted at the Supersonic Combustion Test Plant successfully validated the design and efficiency of the active cooled scramjet combustor. This achievement is expected to strengthen India’s future hypersonic weapon capabilities and boost indigenous defence research.

Commissioning of ICGS Achal in Indian Coast Guard

The Indian Coast Guard further expanded its operational strength with the commissioning of ICGS Achal on May 09, 2026 at Goa Shipyard Limited.

ICGS Achal belongs to the new-generation Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessel series. The name “Achal,” meaning firm or steadfast, reflects the Coast Guard’s dedication towards maritime security and national interests.

The vessel is designed to perform various maritime operations, including:

  • Coastal and offshore surveillance
  • Search and Rescue (SAR) missions
  • Anti-smuggling operations
  • Maritime interdiction
  • Marine pollution response

With over 50 percent indigenous components, the ship represents India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

India–Vietnam Maritime and Scientific Cooperation

India and Vietnam further strengthened their maritime partnership through the visit of INS Sagardhwani to Cam Ranh from May 04 to 08, 2026.

The visit focused on expanding maritime cooperation, professional exchanges, scientific collaboration, and training initiatives between the two countries. These engagements coincide with the completion of a decade of the India–Vietnam Strategic Partnership.

The cooperation also included interactions between scientists from Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory and researchers from the Institute of Oceanography in Nha Trang. Discussions mainly focused on oceanographic research, knowledge sharing, and capacity building in marine science and technology.

During the harbour stay, personnel from the Indian Navy and the Vietnam People’s Navy participated in friendly volleyball matches and yoga sessions, reflecting the strong spirit of friendship between the two nations.

PM Narendra Modi’s UAE Visit to Boost Strategic Defence Partnership

Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit the United Arab Emirates during his Europe tour to further strengthen India-UAE strategic relations.

The visit is expected to focus on advancing the Strategic Defence Partnership between the two countries. The foundation for this partnership was laid earlier this year during the visit of UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to India.

India and the UAE are increasingly cooperating in several important areas such as:

  • Defence manufacturing
  • Maritime security
  • Counter-terrorism coordination
  • Trade and economic development

Defence relations between the two countries have gradually evolved from a traditional buyer-seller relationship into a broader institutional partnership through mechanisms like the Joint Defence Co-operation Committee (JDCC).

On the economic front, trade relations have also expanded significantly after the signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement. Today, the UAE has become one of India’s largest trading partners and an important export destination.

The Indian diaspora in the UAE also plays a major role in strengthening cultural, economic, and strategic ties between the two countries.
