COAS General Dhiraj Seth Embarks on Official Visit to Russia
Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth is undertaking an official visit to Russia from 16 to 18 September 2026 to strengthen the long-standing defence partnership and military cooperation between India and Russia.
During his visit, General Seth received a ceremonial Guard of Honour and paid tribute to fallen soldiers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow, reflecting the strong military traditions shared by the two nations.
The COAS is scheduled to visit the National Defence Control Centre in Moscow and hold discussions with senior officials of the Russian Ministry of Defence, including Deputy Defence Minister Vasily Sergeyevich Osmakov, who oversees defence industry and procurement matters. These interactions are expected to facilitate discussions on modern military developments and future areas of defence collaboration.
General Seth will also travel to Saint Petersburg, where he will visit the Mikhailovskaya Military Artillery Academy and interact with its faculty and leadership. The visit highlights the importance both countries attach to military diplomacy and professional exchanges, which continue to play a significant role in strengthening India-Russia defence ties.
Completion of NCC Expedition ‘Aparajita – Parang La 2026’
The National Cadet Corps (NCC) successfully concluded its flagship all-girls high-altitude expedition, ‘Aparajita – Parang La 2026’, which was formally flagged in at Karzok, Ladakh, on 16 September 2026.
The expedition involved 20 NCC girl cadets selected from different parts of the country. The team crossed the challenging Parang La Pass, situated at an altitude of 5,578 metres, connecting the Spiti Valley of Himachal Pradesh with the Changthang region of Ladakh.
Over a period of 30 days, the cadets covered nearly 250 kilometres, passing through glaciers, snowfields, mountain valleys and rugged terrain. The trek began at Kibber in Himachal Pradesh and concluded at Karzok in Ladakh.
The expedition, flagged off earlier by Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh on 18 August 2026, aimed to promote adventure activities among young women, develop leadership qualities and foster national integration by bringing together cadets from across India.
43rd Indian Coast Guard Commanders’ Conference
The 43rd Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Commanders’ Conference is being held in New Delhi from 17 to 19 September 2026 at the Coast Guard Headquarters.
The conference serves as the highest professional forum of the Indian Coast Guard, bringing together senior commanders from across the country to discuss strategic, operational and administrative issues.
Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth will address the conference and reaffirm the Government’s commitment to strengthening the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard.
Major areas of discussion include:
- Emerging maritime security challenges
- Operational readiness and deployment
- Force modernisation
- Capability enhancement
- Organisational reforms
- Indigenisation under the ‘Make in India’ initiative
The conference reflects India’s efforts to build a modern, technologically advanced and future-ready Coast Guard capable of protecting the nation’s maritime interests and supporting the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
United States Confirms Deployment of Space Weapons
For the first time, the United States Space Force has officially acknowledged that the country possesses offensive weapons deployed in Earth’s orbit.
The announcement was made by US Air Force Secretary Troy Meink during the Air, Space and Cyber Conference held in Maryland. While the exact nature and capabilities of these weapons were not disclosed, Meink stated that such systems are necessary to protect American interests in space against evolving threats.
The announcement comes amid increasing global focus on space security and the development of military capabilities in outer space. The US is also working on the proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system, which would include advanced space-based technologies.
Outer Space Treaty
The militarisation of space has been a subject of international concern since the early days of the space age. To address these concerns, countries signed the Outer Space Treaty in 1967, which prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) in orbit.
However, the treaty does not prohibit all forms of military activity in space. Consequently, major powers such as the United States, Russia, China and India have been developing technologies related to satellite protection, surveillance and counter-space capabilities.
According to the US Space Force, both Russia and China are advancing their military capabilities in space, making outer space an increasingly important domain for future security and strategic competition.
The development of space-based defence systems highlights the growing significance of space in modern military planning and the need for international dialogue on ensuring the peaceful and responsible use of outer space.
