Samarthak: Indian Navy Receives First Indigenous Multi-Purpose Vessel
The Indian Navy received Samarthak, the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), on 27 August 2026. The vessel has been constructed by Larsen & Toubro (L&T) at Kattupalli.
With more than 75% indigenous content, Samarthak represents India’s expanding domestic shipbuilding capabilities. Rather than being designed for a single specialised mission, the vessel has been developed as a versatile platform for trials and evaluation.
Key Capabilities of Samarthak
The vessel can undertake a variety of maritime roles, including:
- Maritime surveillance and reconnaissance
- Offshore patrolling
- Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR)
- Trial and evaluation activities
The name ‘Samarthak’, meaning ‘The Proponent’, reflects the vessel’s intended role as a dependable platform capable of supporting multiple missions.
Its delivery is another step towards strengthening India’s indigenous naval infrastructure and reducing dependence on foreign platforms.
Bhoomi Pujan for T-Series Tank Overhaul Project
A new T-Series Tanks Overhaul Project was inaugurated at the Vehicle Factory, Jabalpur, an establishment under Armoured Vehicles Nigam Limited (AVNL).
Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav performed the Bhoomi Pujan ceremony.
The project is aimed at strengthening India’s capacity to overhaul and maintain its T-Series tanks while improving quality, productivity and technological capabilities.
AVNL’s Contribution to India’s Armoured Forces
The Heavy Vehicles Factory, Avadi, has supplied approximately 4,400 tanks to the Indian Army over the past four decades.
AVNL also has around 25 years of experience in overhauling T-72 and T-90 series tanks.
The new facilities are expected to create additional opportunities for MSMEs, particularly those involved in mechanical, electrical, electronic and hydraulic components and subsystems.
Growth in India’s Defence Production
According to the information provided, India’s defence production increased to around ₹1.80 lakh crore in FY 2025–26, compared with approximately ₹46,000 crore in 2014.
Defence exports also reached an all-time high of approximately ₹39,000 crore, compared with less than ₹1,000 crore earlier.
These developments highlight the government’s emphasis on strengthening domestic defence manufacturing.
Sri Lankan Navy Chief Visits India
Vice Admiral Damian Fernando, Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, is visiting India from 26 to 29 August 2026.
The visit aims to strengthen maritime cooperation and deepen professional engagement between the Indian Navy and Sri Lanka Navy.
During his visit, Vice Admiral Fernando received a ceremonial Guard of Honour at South Block, New Delhi, and paid tribute to fallen Indian soldiers at the National War Memorial on 27 August.
He also held discussions with Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Chief of the Naval Staff, focusing on areas such as:
- Joint operations
- Capacity building
- Training
- Maritime security
- Professional cooperation
The Sri Lankan Navy chief is also scheduled to interact with India’s defence industry to explore potential areas of cooperation.
His visit to Kochi will include interactions with Indian Naval training establishments and Headquarters Southern Naval Command, with particular emphasis on training cooperation and professional exchanges.
India and Sri Lanka share longstanding maritime ties, and such engagements contribute to greater stability and cooperation in the Indian Ocean Region.
India and US Sign ₹292 Crore Javelin Missile Deal
India and the United States have reportedly signed a ₹292 crore agreement for the procurement of approximately 60 Javelin anti-tank guided missiles for the Indian Army.
The procurement has been undertaken under the Emergency Procurement mechanism available to the armed forces.
According to the information provided, deliveries under the relevant procurement process are expected to begin by the end of FY 2026–27.
The limited procurement is linked to the emergency procurement ceiling, under which purchases of an individual equipment category can be made up to ₹300 crore.
The Javelin is a man-portable anti-tank guided missile system developed in the United States.
At the same time, India is pursuing the development of its own man-portable anti-tank guided missile, which has undergone multiple trials and remains under development.
The deal adds another capability to India’s anti-armour arsenal while indigenous systems continue to progress.
First India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee Meeting
India and Kuwait held the inaugural meeting of the India-Kuwait Joint Defence Committee (JDC) in New Delhi on 28 August 2026.
The meeting represents an important step in expanding defence cooperation between the two countries.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in several areas, including:
- Military training
- Joint military exercises
- Military medicine
- Staff talks
- Defence industry
- Research and Development
- Defence technology
The JDC seeks to put into practice the objectives outlined in the India-Kuwait Memorandum of Understanding on Defence Cooperation, signed during the Indian Prime Minister’s visit to Kuwait in December 2024.

The Indian delegation included representatives from the:

- Department of Defence Production

- Armed Forces Medical Services
- Ministry of External Affairs
The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad and Brigadier General Raed Alsakran of Kuwait.
Before the meeting, the Kuwaiti delegation also visited the National War Memorial and DPSU Bhawan in New Delhi. Discussions with representatives of India’s defence industry focused on possible areas of future cooperation.
India-Kuwait Strategic Partnership
India and Kuwait established diplomatic relations in 1962. Their relationship was elevated to a Strategic Partnership in December 2024.
Historical links, geographical proximity, trade relations and the presence of a large Indian community in Kuwait continue to form important foundations of bilateral relations.
The first JDC meeting is expected to provide an institutional framework for expanding defence cooperation between the two countries.
