Exercise KAZIND-2026
The Indian Armed Forces have sent a 60-member contingent to Oskemen, Kazakhstan, to participate in the ninth edition of the India–Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise KAZIND-2026. The exercise is scheduled to take place from 28 September to 11 October 2026.
The Indian contingent consists primarily of personnel from a battalion of the Garhwal Rifles, along with members from other arms and services and personnel of the Indian Air Force. The Kazakhstan Armed Forces will participate with a contingent of similar strength, mainly drawn from its Land Forces.
The primary objective of KAZIND-2026 is to improve interoperability between the two armed forces and strengthen their ability to conduct joint counter-terrorism operations in a sub-conventional environment under a United Nations mandate.
This year’s exercise will concentrate on counter-terrorism operations in semi-urban and mountainous areas. Training will emphasise joint planning and execution, air mobility, and the coordinated use of Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and Counter-UAS capabilities.
The participating troops will undertake practical training involving responses to terrorist attacks, raids, search-and-destroy operations, cordon-and-search missions, securing helipads and landing zones, and Special Heliborne Operations. These activities are intended to enhance coordination and operational effectiveness between the two participating forces.
Indian Navy to Host 2nd Commanders’ Conference 2026
The Indian Navy will conduct the second edition of its Commanders’ Conference in 2026 from 29 September to 1 October 2026 at Nausena Bhawan, New Delhi.
The three-day conference serves as the Navy’s apex-level forum, bringing together senior naval leadership, including Operational and Area Commanders from different locations. It provides an institutional platform to assess the Navy’s operational preparedness at the military-strategic level and interact with senior government officials.
A key focus of the conference will be the Indian Navy’s role in protecting the country’s maritime interests and security of energy, particularly in view of the continuing conflicts in West Asia.
The Navy’s ongoing Operation Urja Suraksha and its growing role as a maritime security partner in the Indian Ocean Region and beyond will also form an important part of the broader discussions.
During the conference, the Chief of the Naval Staff and Commanders-in-Chief will examine several major areas, including operations, materiel, logistics, human resources and training. The discussions will also cover the induction of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data Analysis, Autonomous and Uncrewed Systems, and Cyber Operations.
The conference is expected to reinforce the Navy’s focus on adopting advanced warfighting concepts and accelerating the absorption of new technologies into its operational framework.
Second Joint Defence Cooperation Meeting Between India and Ethiopia
The second Joint Defence Cooperation (JDC) meeting between India and Ethiopia was held in Addis Ababa on 28 September 2026. The discussions covered several areas of mutual interest, including military training, joint exercises, medical cooperation, peacekeeping and defence industry cooperation.
Both countries agreed to broaden their defence partnership through the exchange of personnel between training institutions, exploration of opportunities for joint ventures in defence production, delegation-level visits and sharing of operational experiences.
The meeting represents another step in strengthening defence relations between India and Ethiopia. It forms part of the institutional framework established through the Defence Cooperation Memorandum of Understanding signed in February 2025 by the Defence Ministers of the two countries. The first Joint Defence Cooperation meeting was held in New Delhi in October 2025.
India and Ethiopia have maintained defence relations since 1958. During the visit of the Prime Minister of India to Ethiopia in December 2025, the bilateral relationship was elevated to the level of a Strategic Partnership.
The latest JDC meeting further reflects the efforts of both countries to expand practical cooperation in defence training, production and other areas of mutual interest.
Second India-Fiji Bilateral Joint Working Group Meeting
The second India–Fiji Bilateral Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting was held in New Delhi on 28 September 2026, focusing on ways to strengthen defence cooperation between the two countries.
The discussions covered a broad range of areas, including military training and capacity building, service-to-service cooperation, maritime security, cyber training, defence industry collaboration and institutional cooperation between the armed forces of India and Fiji.
India highlighted the importance it attaches to Fiji and the Pacific Island Countries within its vision of a free, open, inclusive and secure Indo-Pacific. Both sides noted the expansion of their defence engagements and reaffirmed their intention to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual benefit.
As part of the effort to enhance specialised military training, the Fijian delegation is scheduled to visit Kochi on 29–30 September 2026.
During the visit, the delegation will inspect facilities under the Southern Naval Command. The visit is aimed at developing advanced cooperation in naval training and professional aviation training modules, with the broader objective of improving technical capabilities and operational coordination between the two maritime forces.
DRDO and CSIR-CGCRI Collaborate on ₹50-Crore Bulletproof Glass Project
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has partnered with the CSIR-Central Glass and Ceramic Research Institute (CSIR-CGCRI) for a ₹50-crore project aimed at developing indigenous advanced lightweight bulletproof glass for armoured vehicles.
The four-year project is being undertaken with the involvement of DRDO laboratories, including the Naval Materials Research Laboratory and Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL), Chandigarh. The project has reached an advanced stage and is intended to move the technology from laboratory development towards large-scale manufacturing.
A major objective is to develop advanced transparent glass-ceramics capable of providing multi-shot ballistic protection while being considerably lighter and thinner than conventional transparent armour currently used in armoured vehicles.
According to the project team, the technology is being developed to provide robust multi-shot protection against direct AK-47 rifle fire from a distance of 100 metres, with the required velocity specified under the relevant BIS V and VI standard test methods.
The project also aims to facilitate the commercialisation of the technology by involving an industry partner selected by DRDO. CSIR-CGCRI has already received interest from Indian companies in exploring commercial applications of its glass-ceramic technology.
The initiative is therefore focused not only on developing advanced indigenous protective materials but also on creating a pathway for their transition from laboratory-scale research to industrial production.
