21 December 2020 – 37th Corps Day of the Judge Advocate Generals (JAG) Department
- JAG is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with military related disciplinary cases and litigation and assists in providing legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things.
- The JAG’s Department traces its history to the British Articles of War-1385 and the evolution of military law. The corps day of the JAG is the day the Bill of the Army Act was laid in Parliament, 21 December 1949.
- Women were only eligible for appointment as officers in JAG after January 1992. The JAG also provides for permanent commission for women officers.
- The Judge Advocate General is the legal and judicial chief of India and advises the Chief of the Army Staff of legal matters.
Eligibility Conditions to apply for JAG entry:
- Unmarried LAW GRADUATES (aged 21 – 27 years)
- Minimum 55% aggregate marks in LLB Degree (3 years professional after graduation or 5 years after 10+2 examination).
- Candidate should be eligible for registration as an advocate with Bar Council of India/State.
- Candidate should be from a College/University recognized by Bar Council of India.
Webinar on India – Nepal Defence Cooperation Webinar and Expo held
- A webinar and expo between India and Nepal were held today. The theme of webinar was “Exploring Synergies and Strengthening Defence Cooperation with Nepal”. It was organized under the aegis of Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence through SIDM.
- This webinar is the part of Aero India 21 series of webinars which are being organized to boost defence cooperation and engagements with friendly foreign countries and achieve defence export target of $5 billion in the next five years.
- Both sides envisaged close, cordial and multi-dimensional relationship between the two nations which is based on goodwill, mutual respect and appreciation of each other’s aspirations and sensitivities.
- During the webinar twelve Indian Defence Companies Ashok Leyland, BEML, Bharat Electronics Ltd, Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd, L&T Defence, Mahindra Defence Systems Ltd, MKU Ltd, OFB, SSS Springs, Talk PRO Radios, Tata Advanced Systems Ltd and Yaman Technologies Pvt Ltd made company and product presentations on major platforms that India can offer.
- The webinar was attended by more than 100 participants and more than 100 virtual exhibition stalls have been set up in the Expo.
V. Adm. Sandeep Naithani AVSM VSM Assumes Charge as Controller Warship Production and Acquisition

Army testing indigenous artillery with 48-km strike range
- The Army will soon begin testing an indigenously-developed artillery system, which the DRDO contends is the best in its class in the world with a record-breaking strike range of 48-km. If the big gun passes muster, it can fulfil the Army’s requirement for 1,580 such guns worth over Rs 25,000 crore.
- The 155mm/52 calibre advanced towed artillery gun system (ATAGS) is set to undergo “winter user trials” by the Army in Sikkim in January-February, which will be followed by the “mobility trials” and then the “summer trials” in May-June.
- With the development of ATAGS, which has Bharat Forge (Kalyani Group) and Tata Advanced Systems as the production partners, DRDO officials contend the Army has no need to import such guns from Israel or other countries
- The ATAGS has “excellent accuracy, consistency, mobility, reliability and automation”, and can fire five-round bursts as compared to three-round bursts by other foreign contemporary guns.
- “ATAGS is also configured with an `all-electric drive technology’ for the first time in the world, which will ensure maintenance free and reliable operation over longer periods of time,” said another official.
Chennai to host Defence Expo empowering MSME from Mar 19-21, 2021
- The Defence Ministry has given approval to the city-based Swatantra Foundation to host the expo at the Chennai Trade Centre.
- The Aerospace Industry Development Association of Tamil Nadu (AIDAT) and Tamil Nadu Small and Tiny Industries Association (TANSTIA) will be the Co-organisers of the expo.
- The main aim of the expo was to connect the Indian MSME sector companies who have the capacity and the capability to cater to the Defence Sector.
- A Conference and Seminar on Opportunities for MSMEs in Indian Defence Sector – Building an Atma Nirbhar Eco System is also being planned concurrently with the Expo.
- Leading firms like Larsen and Toubro, Bharat Forge, Super Auto Forge, the Ordnance Factories, DGQA, Hindustan Shipyard, LMW, LCC and few other large units have already agreed to participate and exhibit their products in the expo.
Indian Army Subedar wins Gold at Cologne Boxing World Cup 2020 held at Germany
- SUBEDAR AMIT PANGHAL of the MAHAR Regiment won gold medal at the Cologne Boxing World Cup 2020 at Germany in the 52 kg category.
- He had previously won silver medal at the 2019 AIBA World Boxing Championships in the Flyweight division.
- He represented our country in Asian Games 2018 at Jakarta, Commonwealth Games 2018 at Gold Coast, Asian Championships of 2017 and 2019 at Tashkent and Bangkok respectively.
- Panghal was born on 16 October 1995 in Mayna village of Rohtak district, Haryana. His father, Vijender Singh Panghal, is a farmer in Mayna, while his elder brother, Ajay Panghal, who works in the Indian Army. Ajay, a former amateur boxer, inspired Amit to take up boxing in 2007 at Sir Chhoturam Boxing Academy.
- As of March 2018, Panghal is serving the Indian Army as a junior commissioned officer (JCO). He is serving in 22nd Battalion of Mahar Regiment.
Chinese President Xi appoints new General for PLA’s Western Theatre Command amidst Ladakh standoff
- Gen. Zhang Xudong is the new Commander of the Western Theatre Command.
- Xi has promoted four senior Chinese military and armed police officers who include Guo Puxiao, Political Commissar of the Logistic Support Department of the CMC; Li Wei, Political Commissar of the PLA Strategic Support Force and Wang Chunning, Commander.
- The new appointments at the top of the PLA Western Command comes in the midst of the standoff between the Chinese and Indian military in eastern Ladakh since May.
- Not much is known about Gen. Zhang, especially his association with Western Theatre Command, as he reportedly served mostly in other theatre commands of the PLA.
- The Ladakh standoff also happened under the watch of Gen Zhao. It began in May after China dispatched thousands of troops which were mobilised for military exercises to eastern Ladakh borders, sparking a new round of tensions with India.
- At the latest round of foreign ministry-level talks on December 18, the two sides said that they have agreed to continue work towards ensuring complete disengagement of troops in all friction points along the LAC. The meeting also decided to hold the next round of military dialogue at an early date.
