Raksha Mantri interacts with Japanese Defence Minister on COVID-19 issue

  • Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh today held a telephone conversation with Minister of Defence, Japan, Mr Taro Kono. Both ministers also conveyed their commitment to take forward the initiatives of bilateral security cooperation under the framework of the India-Japan Special Strategic and Global Partnership.

Modernization of infrastructure for airfields of Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard and other services

  • Defence Ministry today signed a contract worth around Rs. 1200 crore for Modernization of Airfield Infrastructure (MAFI) of 37 airfields for Indian Air Force, Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) with TATA Power SED (TPSED).
  • The project is a turnkey project that includes installation and commissioning of modern airfield equipment like Cat-II Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Cat II Airfield Lightning System (AFLS), etc. The modern equipment around the airfield will also be directly connected to Air Traffic Control (ATC), thereby providing excellent control of the airfield systems to the air traffic controllers. The upgradation of navigational aids and infrastructure under this project would enhance the operational capability by facilitating air operations of military and civil aircrafts even in poor visibility and adverse weather condition while enhancing aerospace safety.
  • The MAFI Phase-II is a follow-on programme based on MAFI Phase-I that included upgradation of 30 airfields of IAF. The airfields modernised under MAFI Phase-I have been of immense benefit to both military and civil users.

Western Command Chief reviews operational preparedness along western borders

  • Lt Gen RP Singh, GOC-in-C of Western Command reviewed the operational preparedness along the Western Borders &  complimented the efforts of the formations and BRO. He exhorted all ranks to keep working with same zeal.
  • He visited the forward areas of Amritsar, Tibri and Dera Baba Nanak sectors, the Kasowal enclave on the Indo-Pak border and commended the Border Roads Organisation personnel for ensuring the vital connection across Ravi river for villagers and farmers of the area before the onset of monsoon. He also reviewed hospitals present there.

Army and Air Force rescue Helicopter Crew Stuck In Inclement Weather In Sikkim 

  • The Mi-17 medium-lift transport helicopter of the Indian Air Force made an emergency landing near Mukutang in Sikkim (an altitude of 15500 ft) on Thursday due to inclement weather. All four aircrew of the IAF and two Indian Army personnel on board the chopper that made the emergency landing are safe.

Russian military specialists return home from Italy

  • Between March 22 and 25, 15 Russian planes delivered almost 100 Russian virologists and epidemiologists, eight medical brigades, as well as diagnostics and disinfection equipment to Italy.
  • Russian specialists worked in one of the most affected areas of Italy — the city of Bergamo and its surroundings.

First V-22 Osprey aircraft arrives in Japan

  • Bound for Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) units, this helicopter arrived in Japan at U.S. Marine Corps Air Station, Iwakuni.
  • Japan ordered the first five Ospreys aircraft for the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in July 2015 for $332 million.

Japanese Army acquires newest self-propelled howitzers

  • The new 155 mm/52 caliber wheeled self-propelled howitzers, which is manufactured by Japan Steel Works, features an automatic gun-laying system, a semi-automatic ammunition loading system.

Polish Army to receive Rosomak-S armored vehicles designed to carry anti-armor squads

  • Polish Minister of National Defense Mariusz BÅ‚aszczak said last week that the Polish Army is a step closer to acquiring its first batch of Rosomak-S APCs modified to carry Spike LR Dual anti-tank guided missile squads.

UAE cleared to buy up to 4,569 MRAP vehicles from American stocks

  • The U.S. State Department has approved a possible sale of Mine Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) armored vehicles to the United Arab Emirates.
  • The Emirati military seeks to use the vehicles to increase force protection, to conduct humanitarian assistance operations, and to protect infrastructure.

Boeing rolls out first F/A-18 Block III Super Hornet test jet

  • Two of these test jets will head to the US Navy, where they’ll help pilots familiarize themselves with the updated jets and be used in carrier flight tests.
  • The Block III jets will also receive new satellite communications systems and can use podded infrared search and track (IRST) sensors.
