In a landmark decision poised to significantly benefit India’s veteran community, Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh has announced a 100% increase in financial assistance for Ex-Servicemen (ESM) and their dependents. This enhancement will be managed by the Department of Ex-Servicemen Welfare through the Kendriya Sainik Board, reflecting a strong commitment to improving the lives of those who have served the nation.
The revised assistance aims to bolster social security and enhance the quality of life for non-pensioner veterans, widows, and their families, particularly those belonging to lower-income groups. The detailed changes include several crucial components that address the varied needs of the veteran community.
One of the most significant adjustments is the doubling of the Penury Grant, which has increased from ₹4,000 to ₹8,000 per month for each beneficiary. This grant aims to provide ongoing financial support to aged and non-pensioner veterans and widows above 65 years of age who lack regular income.
Additionally, the Education Grant will now rise from ₹1,000 to ₹2,000 per month for each child, applicable for up to two dependent children from Class I to Graduation. This increase also extends to widows who are pursuing a two-year postgraduate course, highlighting the government’s focus on education as a pathway for empowerment.
The Marriage Grant has also seen substantial escalation, increasing from ₹50,000 to ₹1,00,000 for each beneficiary. This fund applies to marriages of up to two daughters of Ex-Servicemen and for widow remarriages, specifically for marriages solemnised after the issuance of the new order.
The newly approved benefits will take effect for applications submitted after November 1, 2025. The financial implications of this initiative are estimated to amount to ₹257 crore annually, funded through the Armed Forces Flag Day Fund (AFFDF) under the Raksha Mantri Ex-Servicemen Welfare Fund.
This decision is viewed as another pivotal step by the Ministry of Defence in enhancing the welfare framework for veterans and their families, reflecting the government’s ongoing commitment to honor the service, sacrifice, and dignity of India’s Ex-Servicemen community. The announcement has been met with widespread approval, heralding a new era of support for those who have dedicated their lives to the security and integrity of the nation.
