Denmark to Procure Naval Strike Missile as Harpoon Replacement in $210 Million Deal with Norway

The Danish Ministry of Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organisation (DALO) has announced plans to procure the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) to replace its existing Harpoon missiles, which were recently provided to Ukraine. This move signifies a strategic shift in Denmark’s defense capabilities, as the deal is set to be a government-to-government transaction with Norway, valued between 900 million Danish kroner and 1.5 billion Danish kroner, approximately $126 million to $210 million.

DALO’s decision follows a comprehensive market survey that identified the NSM as the most suitable option, citing its operational capacity in relation to the Danish Armed Forces’ needs, along with competitive acquisition pricing and expedited delivery times. Furthermore, the Kongsberg anti-ship missile is designed to ensure interoperability with NATO allies, enhancing cooperative defense efforts.

The NSM is currently operational with 13 military forces worldwide, including 11 NATO members, reinforcing its reliability and effectiveness in modern warfare.

Notably, the NSM edged out Saab’s RBS 15 Mk3+ missile during the selection process for the Harpoon replacement program, according to sources from Naval News. Initial integration of the missile will occur on the three Iver Huitfeldt-class frigates of the Royal Danish Navy, which are scheduled to undergo mid-life upgrades. There are also plans to install the missile on future patrol vessels and for upcoming replacements of Thetis-class patrol vessels. This acquisition could potentially initiate a broader replacement of the aging Harpoon system across the Danish naval fleet.

Developed through a collaboration between Kongsberg and Raytheon, the NSM is a maneuverable missile known for its ability to fly at ski-skimming altitudes, allowing it to evade enemy radar and air defense systems effectively. With a striking range exceeding 100 nautical miles (approximately 185 kilometers or 161 miles), the missile features an advanced seeker that enables precise targeting. Its 500-pound (227-kilogram) warhead is equipped with a programmable fuze, adding to its versatility as a weapon that can be launched from various platforms to engage both land and maritime targets.

This impending acquisition represents a significant step for the Danish Navy, bolstering its capabilities amid evolving security concerns in the region.
