A drone incident in Romania has sparked outrage and condemnation directed at Russia from both local and NATO leaders. The drone crash, which occurred in the city of Galati, marked the first time a drone has struck a residential building outside Ukraine since Russia commenced its full-scale invasion in 2022. The incident left two individuals injured, a 14-year-old boy and a 53-year-old woman, prompting immediate emergency responses.
Romania’s government characterized the drone strike as a “serious and irresponsible escalation” from its neighboring country, leading to the expulsion of a Russian diplomat from Romania. President Vladimir Putin of Russia, however, denied any accountability, arguing that there was no conclusive evidence linking the drone to Russia. “No one can say the origin of this or that aircraft until an examination of that aircraft is conducted,” Putin stated during a visit to Kazakhstan, suggesting that further investigation is necessary.
Defence Minister Radu-Dinel Miruta asserted that the markings on the drone identified it as Russian-made. The drone crashed into the roof of an apartment building, igniting a fire. Romanian military forces responded promptly, scrambling two F-16 fighter jets; however, they faced a critical time constraint. General Gheorghe Maxim from the Joint Forces Command explained that the military had only four minutes to react after the drone entered Romanian airspace, leaving them with “no realistic opportunities to engage it safely.”
In the wake of this incident, the Romanian government convened a national defense council meeting to address what it labeled as “the most serious incident to have affected our national territory” since the invasion began. Mayor Nicusor Dan announced that Romania would expel the Russian consul general in Constanta and close the Russian consulate. The Russian embassy responded by requesting evidence linking the drone to them, while Miruta invited Russian officials to analyze the drone debris for verification.
Public sentiment in Galati was tense, with residents expressing frustration over the lack of anti-drone defenses, especially given the city’s proximity to the Ukrainian border. As Dan visited the crash site, he faced vocal backlash from citizens, with calls for his resignation amid rising political tensions following recent government changes.
Internationally, the drone strike elicited strong responses. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the incident as an escalation of Russia’s aggression and pledged to bolster deterrent measures on the EU’s eastern border. Other European leaders, including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, similarly denounced the violation of NATO airspace.
NATO officials have signaled their readiness to defend member territories, with NATO chief Mark Rutte reaffirming the alliance’s commitment to protecting all Allied territories. Discussions regarding potential emergency consultations among NATO members have not yet materialized, despite previous instances of invoking such protocols in response to Russian military activities.
As tensions mount, NATO allies remain committed to supporting Romania and responding to the implications of this unprecedented drone strike. The situation underscores the fragility of the security environment in Eastern Europe and the ongoing threat presented by the conflict in Ukraine.
