Operation ‘Sagar-Manthan’
Operation “SAGAR-MANTHAN” was launched early this year by NCB with Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard and ATS Gujarat Police to counter the threat to national security emanating from maritime trafficking of illicit drugs.
Aim
• Reduce cartel influence in the Indian Ocean region.
• Mitigate narco-terrorism to enhance regional security.
• Improve maritime security to prevent future networks.
International drug links
The UN anti-drug agency UNODC cites India as a major hub of illicit shipments of precursor drugs destined for meth labs internationally, including both neighboring countries like Myanmar and far off destinations in Central America and Africa. For instance, Greater Noida, which is adjacent to Delhi, has unexpectedly emerged as a hot spot for a string of drug busts involving foreigners running meth labs.
The Indian government has established a four-tier NCORD (Narco Coordination) mechanism to enhance coordination among various ministries, departments and law enforcement agencies at the central and state levels, in an attempt to counter the drug issue.
World Drug Day
The International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, or World Drug Day, is marked on 26 June every year to strengthen action and cooperation in achieving a world free of drug abuse.
