Egypt Begins Constructing New Fleet of Coastal Protection Vessels with German Partner NVL

Egypt is embarking on a significant expansion of its naval capabilities with the launch of a new fleet of coastal protection vessels, developed in collaboration with the German shipbuilder NVL. This initiative underscores Egypt’s commitment to enhancing its maritime security and strengthening its local shipbuilding industry.

The production of the PV43-M class vessels commenced in September at Alexandria Shipyard, under the guidance of NVL Egypt, a subsidiary of the NVL Group. This ambitious program will see the construction of ten 43-meter (141-feet) vessels, each equipped with state-of-the-art European weapon systems designed for various roles including surveillance, reconnaissance, and safeguarding maritime infrastructure along Egypt’s coastlines.

Awarded to NVL Egypt in 2023, the project marks a milestone as it is the first naval fleet entirely built in Egypt, with crucial technical support from NVL’s headquarters in Germany. This partnership is not only focused on enhancing the Egyptian Navy’s operational capabilities but also aims to invigorate the domestic maritime sector through technology transfer and the development of a skilled workforce.

Maged Marie, managing director of NVL Egypt, emphasized that this program serves as a cornerstone for advancing Egypt’s shipbuilding capacity and paving the way for future defense initiatives. The collaboration reflects a commitment to long-term growth, not just in construction but also in maintenance, training, and ongoing technical support to ensure the navy remains fully operational and prepared.

The PV43-M program is part of a broader strategy to bolster Egypt’s naval power, which has seen a series of significant developments in recent years. Notably, in 2020, the Egyptian Navy welcomed the ENS Al-Galala and ENS Bernice, two FREMM frigates acquired from Italy’s Fincantieri. Additionally, during the same period, Egypt received four Gowind 2500 corvettes from France’s Naval Group, three of which were constructed locally at Alexandria Shipyard under a technology transfer agreement.

In terms of submarines, Egypt has been expanding its fleet with German-built Type 209/1400 models from thyssenKrupp Marine Systems, with the most recent delivery occurring in 2021. Furthermore, the navy operates Mistral-class helicopter carriers acquired from France, which currently serve as flagships for the expanding fleet.

This concerted effort in naval reinforcement showcases Egypt’s strategic vision to elevate its maritime capabilities and secure its interests in a rapidly evolving regional context.
