The Estonian Center for Defense Investment (RKIK) has recently delivered a selection of Turkish-made wheeled armored vehicles to bolster the capabilities of the Estonian defense forces. Among the vehicles provided are nearly 50 Otokar-developed Arma 6×6 armored personnel carriers (APCs) and Nurol Makina NMS 4×4 tactical light armored vehicles, which have been assigned primarily to the 2nd Infantry Brigade.
In addition to reinforcing the 2nd Infantry Brigade, an unspecified number of NMS 4×4 vehicles were allocated to the 1st Infantry Brigade. Furthermore, four of these tactical vehicles have been designated for use by the deminers of the Rescue Board. Margo Klaos, the Director General of the Rescue Board, emphasized that this development marks a substantial step forward in preparation for crisis situations. The versatility of these vehicles allows for their possible deployment by the Police and Border Guard Board, as well as the Internal Security Service, if required.
This acquisition is part of a larger initiative, with the Estonian government having ordered approximately 230 Arma 6×6 APCs and NMS 4×4 military vehicles in October 2023. The comprehensive 10-year contract includes provisions not only for the vehicles themselves, but also for spare parts, additional units, and maintenance and repair services. According to Marek Mardo, the strategic category manager of air, sea, and combat vehicles at RKIK, the platforms have been tailored to meet the specific requirements of the Estonian military. The only remaining task is the installation of a communication system and additional equipment once the vehicles arrive in Estonia.
Deliveries of these armored vehicles are set to commence in December 2024, with final delivery expected by the end of 2025. The government’s decision to allocate approximately 2.7 million euros for this acquisition is viewed as a crucial investment in the safety and security of Estonian citizens, as stated by Tuuli Räim, the Deputy Secretary General for Rescue and Crisis Management at the Ministry of the Interior.
The introduction of the Arma 6×6 APC significantly enhances the Estonian defense forces’ operational capabilities in high-risk scenarios, improving troop and cargo transportation while also bolstering internal security measures. The Arma 6×6 features a modular design with a maximum weight of 18,500 kilograms (40,785 pounds) and is armed with a 12.7-millimeter machine gun. Powered by a 450-horsepower turbocharged diesel engine, the vehicle can reach speeds of up to 100 kilometers (62 miles) per hour and has a range of 700 kilometers (434 miles).
In contrast, the NMS 4×4 is a multipurpose platform capable of transporting up to 11 personnel while offering protection against mines and improvised explosive devices. It is adaptable and can be fitted with various weapon systems including the 12.7-millimeter machine gun, a 40-millimeter grenade launcher, and systems for air defense and anti-tank operations.
This notable acquisition not only enhances Estonia’s military capabilities but also signifies a commitment to maintaining and strengthening national security in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
