Exail has secured a significant contract to supply “several hundred” K-Ster unmanned underwater mine disposal vehicles to multiple naval forces, further establishing its position in the defense technology sector. The contract, valued at approximately 40 million euros ($46.8 million), marks Exail’s second-largest order for the K-Ster drones, following a noteworthy 60 million euros ($70.2 million) agreement with NATO in August 2024.
The production of the K-Ster fleet will take place at Exail’s Ostend facility in Belgium, which began operations in 2022. The center continues to ramp up production to support international mine countermeasures programs. Exail’s innovative approach aims to enhance the capabilities of naval forces in identifying and neutralizing underwater mines.
The K-Ster drones are intended for use in the final phases of minehunting operations. Each unit is designed as a “consumable” asset, prepared to be destroyed during missions, underscoring their critical role in enhancing naval safety and operational efficiency.
Engineered for versatility, the K-Ster unmanned underwater vehicle can be launched from various platforms, including warships, small support boats, and ground-based mine countermeasure centers. With a compact design measuring 1.5 meters (5 feet) in length and weighing 50 kilograms (110 pounds), it offers agility and operational effectiveness.
The drone is capable of traveling at speeds of up to 6 kilometers (4 miles) per hour and can dive to depths of 300 meters (984 feet), while maintaining an operational range of 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). This combination of features positions the K-Ster as a formidable asset in modern naval warfare and mine countermeasure operations, fulfilling critical needs for global maritime security.
