SECTION A – MILITARY EXERCISES

India-US joint military exercise “Yudh Abhyas 20”

  • Location: Mahajan Field Firing Range of Bikaner district in Rajasthan
  • Dates: 8 February 2021 – 20 February 2021 (16th edition since 2004)
  • 270 US and 250 Indian army soldiers participated.
  • Focus/Aim: Training at the corps-level and below; combat against conventional, unconventional, and hybrid threats; HADR operations
  • About 250 US and 250 Indian army soldiers are participating in the exercise. Both the armies will share their war-related techniques, skills and experience with each other during this exercise. The exercise is one of the largest military training and defense cooperation efforts between India and the United States.
  • This exercise is another step in the growing military cooperation between the two countries, which shows the growth in Indo-US relations. It is also a sign that both India and the US understand the threat of terrorism and are standing shoulder to shoulder in combating the same.

Indian Navy’s Largest War Game – TROPEX 21

  • Indian Navy’s largest war game – the biennial Theatre Level Operational Readiness Exercise (TROPEX 21) – which commenced in early January has ended by third week of February.
  • Conduct of TROPEX is being overseen by Naval Headquarters with participation from all three Commands of the Indian Navy and the Tri-Services Command at Port Blair.
  • First phase: Coastal defence exercise ‘Sea Vigil’ along the entire coastline and Island territories on 12-13 Jan 2021.
  • Second phase: Tri-Service joint amphibious exercise AMPHEX-21 in the Andaman and Nicobar group of Islands from 21-25 January.
  • The Weapon Workup Phase of TROPEX, which concluded recently, witnessed multiple ‘on-target’ ordnance deliveries including missiles, torpedoes, rockets, etc.

SECTION B – INTERNATIONAL MILITARY AFFAIRS

Pakistan to remain on FATF ‘greylist’

  • FATF said Islamabad should demonstrate effective implementation of targeted financial sanctions against all 1267 and 1373 designated terrorists. FATF also said Pakistan courts must give effective, decisive and proportionate punishment to those involved in terrorism and must have an effective system to deal with terror financing.

Bangladesh Navy Ship Prottoy Visits Mumbai

  • It was on a two-day visit to Mumbai from 14 to 15 Feb 21. The ship commanded by Captain Ahamed Amin Abdullah with a crew of 137 personnel docked at Mumbai Port Trust.
  • To commemorate the occasion of 50 years of Bangladeshi independence, for the first time, a marching contingent and military band from Bangladesh participated in India’s Republic Day Parade.

NASA Perseverance Rover Successfully Lands on Mars

  • It landed at Mars’ Jezero Crater on February 18 nearly seven months after its takeoff to the Red Planet. Perseverance becomes the fifth NASA rover to ever touch down on Mars after Sojourner, twin rovers Spirit and Opportunity and Curiosity.
  • The rover’s mission is ambitious: to seek signs of ancient life on the red planet.
  • It’s wheels down for the newest robot to inhabit Mars. Just before 4 p.m. eastern time, the hulking, multibillion-dollar NASA rover Perseverance landed safely on the red planet after a 300-million-mile journey and a nerve-racking plunge to the Martian surface.
  • “Touchdown confirmed. Perseverance is safely on the surface of Mars,” said Swati Mohan, an engineer on the Perseverance team.
  • The one-ton, nuclear-powered Perseverance made a swift, acrobatic descent through the thin Martian atmosphere that, if all went well, has been captured on video for the first time. The rover autonomously timed its movements so that it would alight within a roughly four-mile-wide landing ellipse in Mars’s Jezero Crater, which once hosted a deep and potentially long-lived lake.

Indian Army begins training of Turkmenistan Special Forces to help build their capabilities

  • Special Forces Training School Indian Army has commenced training of Turkmenistan Special Forces in Combat Free Fall as a precursor to a series of customized courses to follow and help build the capability of the Turkmenistan Special Forces.
  • In January, India and Turkmenistan had reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, economic, commercial, defence, education and consular cooperation during the fourth round of foreign office consultations.

Kenya Defence Forces visits Indian Army Museums

  • According to the Western Command, the 7-member delegation of Kenya Defence Forces visited Rajputana Rifles Centre Museum, National War Memorial and other museums.

North Korea’s Kim appoints new Navy, Air Force Chiefs in ‘generation shift’ in Army

  • The central military commission appointed Kim Song Gil as navy commander and promoted him to vice-admiral. Kim Chung Il was appointed as air and anti-air force chief and promoted to lieutenant general. Several dozen commanding officers have also been promoted to lieutenant general and major general.

Ship built in India reaches Chile’s Valparaiso Harbor

  • Chilean Navy Ship Janequeo, built by Indian company Larsen & Toubro Ltd, sails into Valparaiso Harbor on February 23.
  • The ship is a twin-screw Anchor Handling, Towing, Supply and Standby Vessel (AHTSSV) with hybrid propulsion and dynamic positioning system.

SECTION C – INDIAN MILITARY REVIEWS

All About Defence Budget 2021-22

  • Centre has given historic push to defence modernisation by increasing defence capital outlay by 18.75%.
  • Defence allocation in the budget has been increased to Rs 4,78,195.62 crore for this FY.
  • Allocation under Non-Salary Revenue to meet operational requirement has been increased to Rs 54,624.67 crore (around 6% increase).
  • However, the budget documents also revealed that the Defence Ministry spent an extra amount of Rs 20,776 crore for buying new weapon systems and spares for the armed forces in the present fiscal over and above the funds allocated for the purpose.
  • The money has been used to acquire equipment like the Spice-2000 bombs, Spike anti-tank guided missiles, SiG Sauer assault rifles, Excalibur ammunition, multiple types of aircraft spares from Russia along with the ammunition for tanks and fighter jets.
  • The savings of around Rs 18,000 crore can be seen in terms of defence pensions as the government now seems to be determined with the proposals of enhancing retirement age for defence personnel.

Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty took over as the Vice Chief of the Army Staff

  • He assumed the appointment of the Vice Chief of the Army Staff on 01 February 2021. An alumnus of RIMC Dehradun, NDA, and IMA, Lt Gen CP Mohanty was commissioned into the Rajput Regiment on 12 Jun 1982.
  • In a career spanning four decades, he served across a wide spectrum of conflicts and terrain profiles.

Asia’s biggest Aero India show in Bengaluru

  • Dates organized: 03 – 05 February 2021
  • It is organized every alternate year.
  • It enables industry professional to gain market insights, announce new developments and gain media coverage. Aero India offers a unique platform to international aviation sector to bolster business.
  • The Defence Ministry of India, Indian Air Force, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), Department of Space, the Union Civil Aviation Ministry and other such organisations join hands to organise the Aero India show, making it the largest air show in Asia. As many as 601 exhibitors – 523 Indian and 78 foreign – and 14 countries have confirmed participation.
  • In the view of same, to avoid traffic congestions and maintain a free flow of traffic, the Bengaluru traffic police have put in place traffic diversions and alternative route arrangements. These modifications will be in effect from February 3 to February 5, between 5 am to 10 pm.
  • The DRDO will exhibit its latest defence technologies and demonstrate many systems. One of the DRDO’s major attractions will include flying displays of Airborne Early Warning and Control (AEW&C) system, Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas and LCA Navy. Over 300 products, technologies and innovations will be showcased in indoor, outdoor, static and flying displays at the biennial event.
  • Keeping in view the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, multimedia-based presentations and product and technology brochures are being provided digitally for download based on QR code.

Gen Naravane Felicitates All Contingents, Participants of Army Day and R-Day Parade

  • The Bengal Engineers Group Contingent and Garhwal Rifles Regiment Contingent were declared winners and runners up respectively.
  • The Army Day was observed on January 15 to celebrate the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army – Field Marshal Kodandera M Cariappa while the Republic Day parade took place on January 26.

Indian Army Lays Foundation of Nation’s Tallest National Flag In J&K

  • It was laid in Gulmarg in Jammu and Kashmir. The flag will be on a 100 feet-high pole. Major General Virendra Vats hoped it would continue to inspire the nation. Bollywood celebrities Vidya Balan, Siddharth Roy Kapoor and Arbaz Khan were present on the occasion.

Inter-Service Affiliation of the Assam Regiment and Arunachal Scouts with 106 Air Force Squadron

  • This affiliation was formally signed at a solemn ceremony at Tezpur (Assam) on 15 Feb 2021. The affiliation of the Regiment with the SU-30 Squadron of Eastern Air Command will assist them in the development of a mutual understanding of joint ethos & capability.
  • Maj Gen PS Behl of the regiment flew a familiarization sortie on Sukhoi 30 MKI to acquaint himself with the aircraft’s capabilities.

Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar Took Over Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet Onboard INS Vikramaditya

  • Rear Admiral Ajay Kochhar, a specialist in Gunnery and Missile Warfare, was commissioned into the Indian Navy on 01 Jul 1988. In a career spanning 32 years, he has commanded five warships on both the Western and Eastern seaboard. On promotion to the Flag Rank, he assumed charge as Assistant Controller of Carrier Projects & Assistant Controller of Warships Production & Acquisition previously.

President Witnessed Spectacular Operational Demonstration by Andaman and Nicobar Command

  • He witnessed a Joint Services Operational Demonstration at the Radhanagar beach, Swaraj Dweep on February 28, 2021. Integral combat platforms and forces of the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) demonstrated multi-dimensional operational capabilities of the Command, including an amphibious landing.
  • The President was, earlier, briefed by Commander-in-Chief Andaman and Nicobar Command (CINCAN) Lieutenant General Manoj Pande on the operational capabilities and state of readiness of the Command. Fourteen ships of the Indian Navy, two Fast Attack Crafts of Coast Guard, aircraft of the Indian Airforce and over 300 troops of the Indian Army with six BMPs showcased integrated application of combat power of the only Tri-Service Command of the nation. The demonstration highlighted the synergy, cooperation and interoperability between the Services towards achieving desired outcomes.
  • The Operational Demonstration showcased various facets of joint operations and included Combat Free Fall (CFF) and helocasting by the MARCOS, Special Heliborne Operations (SHBO) by Ghatak Platoon and amphibious assault by infantry troops, who landed on the beach with six BMPs and over 300 combatants.

Army launches its first community radio station in North Kashmir to bridge gap between Jawan, Awaam

  • The Indian Army launched its first community radio station ‘Radio Chinar’ (90.4 FM MHz) on 04 March 2021 in Sopore of Baramulla district in North Kashmir to bridge the gap between jawan and awaam (people).
  • It will primarily play all genres of songs starting from Sufi songs in the morning and as the day will progress, will gain tempo in the pitch of songs with a mix of Hindi and Punjabi.

SECTION D – SPECIAL INDUCTIONS AND ACQUISITIONS

CRPF Inducts Women Commandos into Elite Anti-Naxal CoBRA Unit

  • According to the CRPF, on the 88th all-women battalion Raising Day, these women commandos have been inducted along with the introduction of all Mahila brass band which will make CRPF the first force to have a women brass band.
  • 34 women personnel from the 6 Mahila Battalions of CRPF who join the COBRA will undergo a strenuous CoBRA pre-induction training of 3 months.
  • The training of these commandos will reinforce their physical capabilities and tactical acumen by imparting next-level training in firing and special weapons, tactical planning, fieldcraft, explosives, and jungle survival skills. After the completion of their training, the batch of these Mahila Warriors will be posted in LWE areas alongside their male counterparts. 88 Mahila battalion has completed 34 glorious years in service of the nation. The battalion has served across the length and breadth of the country and abroad in the UN peacekeeping missions. Seven brave hearts of the battalion have made sacrifices at the altar of duty. The women warriors of this battalion are proud recipients of several gallantry medals including the highest peacetime gallantry award-The Ashok Chakra.

Plan to Combat the Shortage of Fighter Aircraft in Indian Air Force

  • The Government has approved induction of four squadrons of indigenously designed, developed and manufactured TEJAS Mk-IA aircraft.  A total of 83 TEJAS Mk-IA are planned to be manufactured by HAL and inducted into IAF.
  • Opened North & South Defence Industrial corridors to promote setting up of industries supporting defence equipment.
  • Permitted acceptance of “Suo Moto” proposals from industry for undertaking indigenous design & development for items needed for defence services.
  • Formulated the iDEX (Innovation in Defence Excellence) framework to provide an ecosystem for Startups/individual innovators/MSMEs
  • Institutionalized the Technology Development Fund

Progressing towards Atmanirbhar Defence Bharat

  • Indian Army (IA) launched the Army Design Bureau on 31st August 2016. The role of the ADB is to act as a facilitator for research & development efforts and  procurement of indigenously developed weapons and equipment extensive outreach programme for industry
  • Army Technology Board (ATB) enables indigenous Research and Development efforts in accordance with the operational needs of the IA.
  • Technology Development Fund (TDF) has been launched by the Government to giving impetus to research and development projects beyond the proof-of-concept stage.  It has been provided with a budget of Rs.100 crores.
  • Indian Navy in coordination with Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) is pursuing the indigenous development and acquisition of a Twin Engine Deck Base Fighter (TEDBF).
  • Ministry of Defence has notified a ‘Negative list’ of 101 items for which there would be an embargo on the import beyond the timeline indicated against them. This is a big step towards self-reliance in defence.

HAL Receives RFP for 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft from Indian Air Force

  • HAL received a Request for Proposal (RFP) from the IAF for their Basic Trainers requirement at the Aero India 2021 in Bengaluru on February 04, 2021.
  • The RFP is for 70 HTT-40 Basic Trainer Aircraft with a provision for 38 more. The documents were handed over by Deputy Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sandeep Singh and DG (Acquisition), Ministry of Defence Shri V L Kantha Raoto Chairman and Managing Director, HAL Shri R Madhavan.
  • The certification will be given against the Program Compliance and Quality Review (PCQR). The production will take place at two manufacturing facilities of HAL in Bengaluru and Nashik.
  • The trainer will have more than 60 percent indigenous content and is supported by agencies such as Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification(CEMILAC), Regional Director Aeronautical Quality Assurance (RDAQA), Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE)among others.

HAL Hands Over Five ALHs Mk III to Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard

  • HAL has handed over 3 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH) Mk III to Indian Navy and 2 ALHs to ICG as part of its 16 ALHs contract during the ongoing Aero India 2021 at AFS Yelahanka on February 05, 2021.
  • The ALH has clogged close to 3,00,000 cumulative flight hours and proven its mettle in versatile operations. It is fitted with state-of-the-art glass cockpit and powerful Shakti engine.
  • The contract involves integration of 19 major systems with the existing ALH MK III that include IFF MKXII & ATC Xpdr with ADS-B Out, V/UHF Communication System, Traffic Alert and Collision Avoidance (TCAS-I), SAR Homer system, Automatic Deployable Emergency Locator Transmitter (ADELT), Loud Hailer, Radio altimeter, Rescue Basket, Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU), IADS System, AFCS, Digital Video Recording System (SSDVR), Automatic Identification System (AIS), High Intensity Search Light (HISL), Pressure Refueling System, Control grips, EO POD Rev III, Surveillance Radar System and 12.7 mm Gun system.

HAL LUH (Army Variant) Receives Initial Operational Clearance

  • It has received this clearance from Centre for Military Airworthiness and Certification (CEMILAC) in the presence of Raksha Mantri during the ongoing Aero India 2021.
  • The LUH is a 3-ton class new-gen single engine helicopter indigenously designed and developed by Rotary Wing Research and Design Centre of HAL. This will replace the ageing fleet of Cheetah/Chetak helicopters operated by the Services.

01 Feb 21 – 80th Raising Day of Army Dental Corps

  • Director General Dental Services & Colonel Commandant Army Dental Corps Lt General N K Sahoo laid down a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi to honour the fallen heroes.
  • From a humble beginning in 1941 with eight Dental Officers, the Army Dental Corps is now an elite service of the Indian Armed Forces with nearly one thousand officers and two thousand other ranks dedicated to looking after the oral health requirements of our soldiers, their dependents and Ex Servicemen.

01 Feb 21 – 45th Raising Day of Indian Coast Guard

  • From a modest beginning with just 07 surface platforms in 1978, ICG has grown into a formidable force with 156 ships and 62 aircraft in its inventory and is likely to achieve targeted force levels of 200 surface platforms and 80 aircraft by 2025.
  • Despite the restrictions imposed by the ‘COVID-19’ pandemic, Indian Coast Guard has maintained 24×7 vigil in the Exclusive Economic Zone, by deploying about 50 ships and 12 aircraft daily.

SECTION F – MISSILE TESTS

PSLV C51 launched with Brazil’s Amazonia – 1

  • PSLV-C51 successfully launched Amazonia-1 along with 18 co-passenger satellites on February 28, 2021 from Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR, Sriharikota.
  • PSLV-C51/Amazonia-1 is the first dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a GoI company under Department of Space.
  • Amazonia-1 is the optical earth observation satellite of National Institute for Space Research (INPE). This satellite would further strengthen the existing structure by providing remote sensing data to users for monitoring deforestation in the Amazon region and analysis of diversified agriculture across the Brazilian territory.
  • PSLV-C51/Amazonia-1 is the first dedicated commercial mission of NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), a Government of India company under Department of Space.
  • The 18 co-passenger satellites onboard PSLV-C51 includes four from IN-SPACe and fourteen from NSIL. Out of 4 satellites from IN-SPACe, three were UNITYsats designed and built as a joint development by Jeppiaar Institute of Technology, Sriperumbudur (JITsat), G.H.Raisoni College of Engineering, Nagpur (GHRCEsat) and Sri Shakti Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore (Sri Shakthi Sat) and one was Satish Dhawan Sat (SDSAT) from Space Kidz India. The fourteen satellites from NSIL carried were the commercial satellites from India (1) and USA (13).
  • PSLV-C51 is the 53rd flight of PSLV and 3rd flight of PSLV in ‘DL’ configuration (with 2 strap-on motors). This was the 78th launch vehicle mission from SDSC SHAR, Sriharikota.

Anti-Tank Guided Missile Systems ‘Helina’ And ‘Dhruvastra’ Complete Successful User Trials

  • Joint User Trials for Helina (Army Version) and Dhruvastra (Air Force Version) Missile Systems have been carried out from Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) platform in desert ranges.
  • These are third generation, Lock on Before Launch (LOBL) fire and forget Anti-Tank Guided Missiles that can engage targets both in direct hit mode as well as top attack mode.

Navy’s VL-SRSAM Missile System Successfully Launched

  • Two launches of Vertical Launch Short Range Surface to Air Missile were carried out on 24th Feb 2021 from a static vertical launcher from Integrated Test Range (ITR), Chandipur off the coast of Odisha. The missiles were tested for minimum and maximum range.
  • The launches were monitored by senior scientists from various DRDO labs involved in the design and development of the system such as DRDL, RCI, Hyderabad and R&D Engineers, Pune.

SECTION G – FUTURE PLANS

Indian Air Force to Participate in Multinational EX Desert Flag VI along with France, US in UAE

  • Participating countries: UAE, USA, France, Saudi Arabia, S. Korea, India, Bahrain
  • Dates & location: 03 Mar 21 to 27 Mar 21 at Al-Dhafra airbase, UAE.
  • IAF assets:  6 Su-30 MKI, 2 C-17 Globemaster, 1 IL-78
  • Aim: Provide operational exposure to the participating forces while training them to undertake simulated air combat operations in a controlled environment.

Indian Navy to commission third Scorpene-class submarine INS Karanj in Mumbai on March 10

  • The submarine has been constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited under the ‘Make in India’ program. The Indian Navy has already inducted two submarines of the class named INS Kalvari and INS Khanderi from the same shipyard.
  • A total of 6 submarines are to be built in this shipyard. Of which, the trials of Vela and Wazir are underway, while the construction of the 6th submarine is going on.
