In a significant advancement for military healthcare in India, a state-of-the-art Femto-LASIK Suite has been inaugurated at the Army Hospital (Research and Referral) located in Delhi Cantonment. The facility was unveiled by Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), alongside Lieutenant General Sadhna S Nair, the Director General of Medical Services (Army). The inauguration was attended by senior military officials and dignitaries.
This advanced suite utilizes cutting-edge femtosecond laser technology for vision correction, providing unmatched precision and customization for the treatment of refractive errors and corneal diseases. The technology enables minimally invasive procedures, thereby allowing for quicker recovery times and improved visual outcomes—an essential requirement for young and middle-aged individuals in the armed forces who depend on optimal visual acuity for operational readiness.
The inauguration ceremony melded traditional elements with modern advancements, as the venue was adorned with marigold garlands, signifying auspicious beginnings. Following the inauguration, attendees were given a guided tour of the facility, which highlighted the transformative potential this suite holds for eye care within the military healthcare system.
During the ceremony, Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, the first woman to assume the role of DGAFMS, emphasized the pivotal role of integrating technology to enhance the well-being of soldiers and their families. Similarly, Lt Gen Sadhna S Nair, also a trailblazer as the first woman DGMS (Army), spoke to the broader implications of such advancements, highlighting how they elevate the standard of clinical infrastructure within the armed forces.
The establishment of the Femto-LASIK Suite reflects a global trend in military medicine, aligning with initiatives such as the U.S. Army’s Vision Research Program, which addresses vision-related injuries amongst service members. With this latest development, the Army Hospital (R&R) strengthens its role as a leader in military medical innovation, ensuring that India’s defense personnel receive top-tier healthcare tailored to their unique operational requirements.
