Fincantieri has recently entered into a significant agreement to enhance the Italian Navy’s Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) multipurpose offshore patrol frigates, aiming to elevate them to “full combat” capability. This initiative, overseen by the European procurement agency OCCAR, plans to transform vessels currently operating in the “light” PPA configuration—which is suited for basic patrol, search, and rescue missions—into the more advanced “light plus” variant that incorporates additional missile capabilities.
In a move toward modernizing naval warfare, the initiative will also integrate advanced cyber defense solutions into these platforms. Fincantieri’s endeavor is not limited to newly constructed ships; it encompasses vessels that have already been delivered, ensuring that the entire fleet is brought up to the most sophisticated operational standards.
The financial commitment from Fincantieri for this project is approximately 62 million euros, which translates to around $72.6 million. During the upgrade process, Fincantieri will collaborate closely with the local defense industry partner, Leonardo, thereby strengthening domestic defense capabilities.
The PPA program is designed to produce highly versatile vessels that follow a “fitted for” approach, enabling the gradual incorporation of operational capabilities as needed. This flexibility reflects the evolving requirements of contemporary naval operations, positioning Fincantieri prominently within the PPA project.
The specifications of the PPA frigate reveal impressive capabilities. Stretching 143 meters in length and 17 meters in beam, the Thaon di Revel-class vessel is powered by a formidable combination of propulsion systems, including a 43,000-horsepower gas turbine and two 13,000-horsepower diesel engines among others. Its maximum speed exceeds 50 kilometers per hour, and it boasts an operational range of 5,000 nautical miles.
The armament options for the frigate further enhance its combat prowess, allowing for a vertical launch system capable of deploying up to 16 missiles. Additionally, it is equipped with decoy launchers, a 127-millimeter rapid-fire naval gun, various caliber automatic cannons, and an advanced electronic warfare suite, all of which broaden its tactical capabilities on the modern battlefield.
This contract not only underscores Fincantieri’s commitment to advancing naval technology but also reiterates the Italian Navy’s focus on maintaining a capable and modern fleet prepared for diverse missions in an increasingly complex maritime environment.
