In a deeply emotional tribute marked by reverence and personal grief, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of the Army Staff, honored the memory of Naib Subedar Baldev Singh of the 18th Battalion, Jammu and Kashmir Rifles (18 JAK RIF). Baldev Singh lost his life in the line of duty at Kumar Post on the perilous Siachen Glacier, a location renowned as the world’s highest and most formidable battlefield.
The solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place at Shraddhanjali Sthal, Base Hospital, Delhi Cantonment. General Dwivedi placed a wreath on the mortal remains of the valiant Junior Commissioned Officer, a gesture reflecting not only military respect but also profound personal loss, as Baldev Singh had previously served under his command and was nurtured as a mentee in the same battalion.
Naib Subedar Baldev Singh’s journey in the Indian Army began in 2002, coinciding with Operation Rakshak in the conflict-ridden Kashmir Valley. In October 2003, then-Colonel Dwivedi assumed command of the 18 JAK RIF, where he first encountered Baldev Singh, who was stationed in Delta Company. Recognizing his potential, Colonel Dwivedi championed Baldev Singh’s capabilities by selecting him for specialized roles within the battalion’s Signal Platoon and personally guiding him through the rigorous responsibilities expected of an Infantry Signaller. Over the years, their relationship evolved from a mentor-mentee dynamic into one of mutual trust and respect, akin to family.
Throughout his service, Baldev Singh proved to be an exemplary soldier, participating in numerous operational missions alongside General Dwivedi. His commitment, courage, and technical proficiency were hallmarks of his military career. Approximately a year prior to his death, he earned promotion to Naib Subedar, a recognition of his unwavering dedication and leadership qualities.
Tragically, on April 20, 2025, Baldev Singh made the ultimate sacrifice while deployed at Kumar Post, located in the harsh Northern Glacier of Siachen, an area notorious for its extreme weather and challenging conditions. This post demands exceptional physical and mental resilience from all stationed there, and Baldev Singh’s loss reverberated through the ranks of the 18 JAK RIF and deeply affected General Dwivedi, who mourned the loss of not just a soldier, but a close comrade whom he had personally trained.
In its official communication, the Indian Army extended its heartfelt condolences to Baldev Singh’s bereaved family and paid tribute to his gallant service, emphasizing that his legacy would resonate for generations of soldiers yet to come. “The Indian Army stands in steadfast solidarity with the bereaved family during this hour of grief and salutes the indomitable spirit and devotion to duty of Naib Subedar Baldev Singh. His legacy of sacrifice and service will continue to inspire generations of soldiers,” the statement read.

Lt Gen MV Suchindra Kumar, Army Commander of the Northern Command, honored his supreme sacrifice and reaffirmed the Northern Command’s support for Baldev Singh’s family. Similarly, the General Officer Commanding of the Fire and Fury Corps, along with fellow officers and soldiers, paid their respects, highlighting Baldev Singh’s bravery and the significance of his ultimate sacrifice.
