General Upendra Dwivedi Engages with Command Subedar Majors to Enhance Troop Welfare and Leadership

In a significant move aimed at reinforcing the Indian Army’s commitment to troop welfare and leadership development, General Upendra Dwivedi, the Chief of Army Staff, conducted a high-level meeting with newly appointed Command Subedar Majors at the Directorate General of Military Operations. The gathering focused on critical themes such as enhancing troop welfare, fostering unit cohesion, and promoting effective leadership within the ranks.

During the meeting, General Dwivedi emphasized the pivotal role that Command Subedar Majors play as a vital link between officers and soldiers, emphasizing the importance of shared accountability in cultivating a resilient combat force. He urged the newly appointed Subedar Majors to take an active role in mentoring soldiers, elevating their well-being, and ensuring high operational morale, especially in light of lessons drawn from recent conflicts.

Since assuming the role of Army Chief on June 30, 2024, General Dwivedi has been an advocate for modernization and self-reliance within the Army. Under his guidance, there has been a notable acceleration in the Army’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, wherein 75% of the defense capital budget for 2024 has been allocated for domestic procurement—a significant rise from the 68% allocation in the previous fiscal year. His experience as the former Northern Army Commander has positioned him to effectively leverage indigenous technologies to upgrade the Army’s capabilities.

Complementing these modernization efforts, the Indian Army’s Welfare Directorate is actively engaged in a variety of targeted welfare schemes and Corporate Social Responsibility collaborations, further reinforcing the Army’s dedication to providing a comprehensive support system for its personnel.

This interaction with the Command Subedar Majors represents a crucial step in the Indian Army’s ongoing strategy to enhance readiness and resilience while adopting a soldier-first approach to address the evolving operational challenges ahead.
