Germany is actively considering a deal to acquire additional Patriot air defense systems from the United States for Ukraine, amid escalating aerial assaults from Russia. Government spokesman Stefan Kornelius confirmed on Friday that more intensive discussions are underway regarding the potential acquisition of these anti-missile systems.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz reportedly brought up the issue during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Thursday, with the exchange subsequently validated by Kornelius. This dialogue comes at a time when the United States, a principal military supporter of Ukraine since the onset of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, recently announced a pause in key weapon shipments to Kyiv. Reports suggest that this pause includes the much-needed Patriot systems, which Ukraine relies on to counter Russian air strikes.
The uptick in missile and drone attacks from Moscow in recent weeks has heightened concerns among German officials, particularly with regard to the ramifications of a potential cessation of Patriot system deliveries and related ammunition. Various German media outlets have indicated that Berlin has engaged with US officials to explore a deal that would enable the purchase of these defense systems on behalf of Ukraine.
It has been highlighted that Germany is still awaiting a response from US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth regarding a previous request made “several weeks ago” for two Patriot units. Ukraine has consistently stressed the urgency of enhancing its air defense capabilities, particularly in securing more Patriot systems, though acquiring these assets has proven to be a challenge.
In a statement made in April, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky articulated that his government aims to procure “at least” ten Patriot systems as a critical measure to protect against ongoing Russian threats. As discussions continue, the outcome could have significant implications for Ukraine’s defensive posture as it contends with intensified aggression from the Russian military.
