Germany Enhances ASUL Defense System to Counter Drone Threats

Germany’s defense sector is poised for a significant upgrade in counter-drone capabilities following the commissioning of Hensoldt to enhance the ASUL defense system. This modular counter-drone system is designed specifically for integration into extensive air defense networks, providing real-time detection, classification, identification, and engagement of small unmanned aircraft.

ASUL employs a comprehensive approach that incorporates scalable sensors and effectors, combining both active and passive radar technologies along with electro-optical systems. These features create a robust defense mechanism against an increasing number of threats posed by drones in various operational environments.

In response to ongoing operational feedback and advancements in technology, Hensoldt is planning a series of upgrades aimed at enhancing the capabilities of ASUL to meet the evolving requirements of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s Armed Forces. The upgrades will focus on the integration of advanced sensor technologies alongside software enhancements, promising improved overall functionality.

Initially developed by ESG Elektroniksystem- und Logistik-GmbH—a subsidiary of Hensoldt—ASUL was officially delivered to the German Armed Forces in 2022. The system consists of two modular, container-based units designed for specialized functions in counter-drone operations.

The first unit is a 10-foot module dedicated to detection and identification. It employs an extendable mast equipped with three radars, day/night imaging cameras, and a radio frequency direction finder. This configuration allows operators to pinpoint drone signals and, potentially, their operators.

Complementing this is a 20-foot unit focused on threat response. This unit is outfitted with a high-power, remote-controlled jammer capable of disrupting drone communications over several kilometers. This feature is critical for addressing threats in a timely manner.

At the core of the ASUL system lies the Elysion Mission Core software, which harnesses AI-based algorithms to merge real-time sensor data. This capability ensures that operators receive up-to-date information, facilitating quick and informed decision-making. Once the system identifies a potential target, the operator is immediately alerted to assess whether the drone represents a genuine threat. If deemed necessary, the jammer is activated to interfere with the drone’s connection to its controller, causing the drone to hover in place. This pause provides operators with the opportunity to evaluate the threat level and determine the most appropriate course of action.

As the landscape of aerial threats continues to evolve, Germany’s investment in enhancing the ASUL system highlights a proactive approach to national defense, ensuring that its military remains equipped to tackle emerging challenges in airspace security.
