The Assam Police Department said on Tuesday that a fitness survey of all state police employees would be conducted soon to determine those who are ‘unfit’ in terms of their Body Mass Index (BMI). The fitness exam would be required of all personnel, including officers from the Indian Police Service (IPS) and the Assam Police Service (APS). Those deemed ‘unfit’ will be granted Voluntary Retirement from Service (VRS).
Govt Orders to Get the Police in Shape
The police officers have until August 15 to improve their fitness level before the BMI exam begins. In line with the CMO, Assam Police Hq has decided to go for professional recording of the Body Mass Index (BMI) of all Assam Police personnel including IPS/APS officers and all DEF/Bn/Organisation. Assam Police staff, including IPS and APS officials, will be having three months’ notice until August 15th, and then the BMI assessments will start within the next fifteen days.
Except for individuals with legitimate medical reasons such as hypothyroidism, those who are obese (BMI 30+) will be given another three months to lose weight (until November 30th) before being provided VRS.” Assam DGP GP Singh stated that officers found unfit will be given additional three months to get in shape and retake the test. They will be offered Voluntary Retirement if they fail that test as well. In addition, he stated that he will be the first to take the BMI test in August. Earlier this month, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that approximately 300 Assam Police officers who are “habitual drinkers” will be granted Voluntary Retirement from Service.
The Chief Minister of Assam Sarma, also said the process to fill the vacancies of new personnel has already begun and accordingly VRS to old ones has started. He said the rules were already there but no one implemented the rules and Sarma asked the top Brass of the Police Service to remove the deadwood from the organization and make it into a fitter organization.
