Police in Greece have arrested multiple individuals in connection with two separate violent incidents targeting politicians and resulting in fatalities. On Friday, authorities announced the apprehension of three suspects linked to a series of attacks carried out on July 1 in Thessaloniki, which involved homemade explosives targeting the homes and vehicles of members of the ruling New Democracy party. Tragically, these attacks resulted in the death of Afroditi Nestora’s mother, who was injured while attempting to extinguish flames from one of the explosions. Nestora herself, along with her father and two other individuals, sustained injuries during the incidents, which involved the use of gas canister explosives.
The police’s anti-terror unit has made arrests in Thessaloniki and Crete, identifying the detained individuals as young anti-establishment figures familiar to law enforcement. The attacks reportedly took place in a rapid sequence, with government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis confirming they occurred within a 15-minute window. The other political figures targeted were Zisis Ioakimovic, chairman of the party’s local executive committee, and former MP Savvas Anastasiades. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his outrage, labeling the assaults as “cowardly, terrorist, and murderous.”
In a separate case, police have detained two individuals in Athens related to a 2010 attack on a bank that killed three employees, including a pregnant woman. This incident occurred during an anti-austerity protest, where a firebomb was thrown at the Marfin bank in central Athens. Despite a previous manslaughter conviction for negligence against three bank officials, the identities of the actual perpetrators remained elusive until now.
These recent developments highlight ongoing tensions and the use of violence by leftist and anarchist groups in Greece, which have historically targeted political figures and institutions. While such attacks are often intended to create chaos and send a message, they have resulted in increasing scrutiny and a robust response from law enforcement agencies. The sequences of violent actions have reignited discussions about political extremism and public safety within the nation.
