Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and Safran Aircraft Engines have signed a MoU to develop industrial cooperation in ring forging manufacturing for commercial engines.
MoU for Commercial Engine Parts Manufacturing
HAL will produce LEAP (Leading Edge Aviation Propulsion, powering Airbus A320 Neo family and Boeing 737 Max) engine forgings at its Foundry & Forge facility here as part of the MoU. “Safran is a long-standing partner, especially on our Helicopter programmes, as evidenced by the joint development of the “Shakti” helicopter engine. We are also going to codesign and coproduce the next gen IMRH engine with Safran.” We are proud to take this partnership to another level, and to develop our skills in key technologies”, said Mr. C.B. The MoU was signed by Mr. Mihir Kanti Mishra, CEO (Bangalore Complex), HAL and Mr. Dominique Dupuy, Senior Vice President (Purchasing), Safran Aircraft Engines in Bengaluru in the presence of key officials from both companies yesterday.
“We are delighted to expand our collaboration with HAL, which is already part of the LEAP Supply Chain through our joint-venture in Bengaluru dedicated to the production of aero-engines pipes”, said Jean-Paul Alary, CEO, Safran Aircraft Engines.
An Industrial Cooperation Contract was also signed by Mr. Anil Kumar VN, GM (F&F), HAL and Mr. Jean Michel, Strategy Director and India Development for Safran Military Division.

US Congress Clears Historic Deal To Jointly Make Jet Engines for IAF
In a major push for India-US defence cooperation, the United States Congress has cleared GE Aerospace’s agreement with state-owned Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce fighter jet engines for the Indian Air Force.
India’s AMCA 5th Gen Fighter Aircraft
DRDO is poised to get approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) for developing the 5th gen fighter based on a timeline that projects the first flight by 2027 and squadron induction by 2035! The full-scale engineering development case for the indigenous twin-engine advanced medium combat aircraft, at a cost of around Rs 15,000 crore, will ‘soon’ be sent to the PM-led CCS for the final approval
The only operational 5th generation jets in the world currently are the American F/A-22 Raptors and F-35 Lightning-II Joint Strike Fighters, with the Chinese Chengdu J-20 and Russian Sukhoi-57 also somewhat there.
The IAF currently plans seven squadrons (126 jets) of the AMCA. With India failing to develop its own jet engine, the first two AMCA squadrons will be powered by the American GE-414 engines in the 98 Kilonewton thrust class, like the Tejas Mark-2 jets.
