Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Regional Office of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday to encourage close defence industry collaboration between India and Malaysia, according to a news release from the Ministry of Defence. He also met with the Indian diaspora and urged them to strive tirelessly for India and Malaysia’s shared development.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Regional Office of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, recognising defence exports as a critical pillar of the Indian defence industry’s long-term prosperity.
Significance of the New Regional Office
This Regional Office will enhance India and Malaysia’s strong defence industrial collaboration. According to the press release, it will also function as a focus for HAL’s involvement with the larger South-East Asian region and as a portal for other Indian Defence PSUs. Malaysia is home to the second biggest population of people of Indian origin and has a sizable NRI community. On two separate occasions, the Defence Minister met with members of the Indian diaspora.
Ministers and top officials from the Malaysian government, as well as prominent figures from politics, culture, and industry, attended the first community interaction. Malaysian Minister for Human Resources V Siva Kumar and Deputy Minister for Entrepreneurship and Cooperative Development Saraswathy Kandasami attended the reception. During the event, the Defence Minister praised the strong history of Indian classical art tradition in Malaysia, as evidenced by performances of Odissi dance and Carnatic and Hindustani music by prominent Malaysian performers.
The Defence Minister emphasised that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership has improved the country’s respect and standing on the world scene. He highlighted the contribution of the Indian diaspora to India’s growth story. He urged them to work honestly for India and Malaysia’s mutual progress, emphasising the concept of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’.
