Honeywell has announced a significant contract aimed at modernizing Japan’s H60 fleet and enhancing the country’s new CH-47F Chinook heavy-lift helicopters. This partnership will see the provision of advanced aerospace systems designed to elevate various operational aspects of the aircraft, including power generation, navigation, safety, and overall situational awareness.
The initiative is a crucial step towards bolstering aircraft reliability, maintainability, and mission performance, reflecting a growing focus on modernizing Japan’s defense capabilities. Honeywell stated that these contract awards will expand the company’s presence in Japan’s defense sector and reinforce its commitment to ensuring mission readiness and long-term operational efficacy.
The advanced systems to be integrated into both the H60 and CH-47F fleets include Honeywell’s RDR-7000 weather radar, an upgraded APN-209 radar altimeter, and an Embedded M-code GPS/INS system. These components play pivotal roles in optimizing flight operations:
-
RDR-7000 Weather Radar: This advanced weather radar system provides capabilities for turbulence detection, lightning and hail identification, and predictive wind shear alerts. Furthermore, it supports essential ground and sea-mapping functions, which are vital for operational efficiency and safety.
-
APN-209 Radar Altimeter: Designed for enhanced reliability and performance, particularly in adverse weather conditions, the APN-209 can be configured to function as either an integrated altitude indicator or a standalone transceiver, allowing compatibility with various aircraft display systems.
- Embedded M-code GPS/INS System: This sophisticated navigation solution combines satellite-based navigation with inertial sensors, ensuring accurate positioning even in scenarios where GPS signals may be jammed or unavailable.
In addition to these systems, the CH-47F Chinooks will be powered by the T55-714A engine, which enables the helicopters to attain speeds of up to 170 knots (315 kilometers/196 miles per hour). Earlier this year, Japan took another significant step in its defense modernization by contracting Kawasaki Heavy Industries to produce 17 CH-47 Chinook helicopters locally. These new helicopters will incorporate vital upgrades to the airframe, fuel system, and drivetrain, aimed at enhancing lift capacity.
As Japan continues to invest in its defense infrastructure, this collaboration with Honeywell underscores a commitment to advancing operational capabilities and ensuring enhanced mission readiness for its aerial fleet.
