The Indian Air Force (IAF) and the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) have successfully concluded their 14th edition of Air Staff Talks (AST) in New Delhi, marking a significant step in enhancing military relations between the two nations. Held over four days, from May 19 to 22, 2025, the discussions centered on fostering cooperation through joint training, sharing expertise, and professional military education.
The bilateral talks were co-chaired by Air Vice Marshal II Kuttappa from the IAF and Air Marshal Pichitchai Surakitpipat from the RTAF. Both leaders emphasized the need to strengthen collaboration in addressing shared security challenges that impact the region. The talks underscored the historical relationship between the two air forces, with the RTAF tracing its roots back to its establishment in 1913, making it one of Asia’s oldest air forces. The IAF has continued to build on its legacy through strategic partnerships, in line with India’s Act East Policy.
A notable highlight of the event was the ceremonial exchange of mementos between the two air chiefs. This gesture symbolized the growing bond between the IAF and RTAF, set against a backdrop featuring the flags of both nations alongside the respective emblems of the air forces. The theme of the event, “14th IAF-RTAF AST, 19-22 May 25,” signified the ongoing commitment to cooperation.
As one of the pillars of India’s defense framework, the IAF comprises around 135,000 personnel as of January 2025, led by the Chief of the Air Staff, an Air Chief Marshal. The RTAF, based at Don Muang Airbase in Bangkok, brings a wealth of historical experience, including its participation in the Franco-Thai War in the 1940s. This deepening relationship aligns with India’s broader outreach strategy toward Southeast Asia, which aims to foster regional stability and cooperation as part of the Act East Policy, celebrating its 10th anniversary this year.
The discussions also highlighted the IAF’s ongoing modernization efforts amid advancements in capabilities, particularly with platforms such as the Rafale fighter jets. However, there were no official confirmations regarding recent rumors about technology-sharing issues with Dassault Aviation. The conclusion of the talks paves the way for future joint exercises and broader defense collaboration between India and Thailand, signaling a promising outlook for enhanced military cooperation in the years ahead.
