IAF’s Sukhoi Fighter Crashes In Nashik

A Sukhoi fighter plane of the Indian Air Force crashed in Nashik district of Maharashtra on Tuesday, police said. The pilot and co-pilot ejected safely, Special Inspector General of Nashik Range D R Karale told PTI. The plane crashed in a field near Shirasgaon village, the IPS officer said.

The fighter jet was being flown by Wing Commander Bokil and his second in command Biswas when it crashed in a farm in Shirasgaon village in Nifad tehsil at 1.20 pm. Both the pilots ejected safely and have suffered minor injuries, another police official said. They were shifted to the HAL hospital. After it crashed, the aircraft caught fire which was doused. The parts of the plane are now spread in a 500 metre radius, he said.

The plane took off from a military base in Kayseri on a training flight and later crashed for as yet unknown reasons, the ministry said. Images on Turkish media showed black smoke billowing from a charred, half destroyed carcass of a plane in an agricultural field.

Centre Issues Rs 10,000 Crore Tender For Acquisition of 12 Su-30 MKI Fighter Jets

In a step to improve the squadron strength of the IAF the Ministry of Defence issued a Rs 10,000 crore tender to HAL for the acquisition of 12 Sukohi-30 MKI fighter jets. The aircraft will be manufactured in India by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and will carry 60 percent indigenous contents.

ABOUT SU-30MKI

The Su-30MKI is a multi-role air dominance fighter that can carry a versatile array of weapons including the Astra Mk-1 long-range air-to-air missile, Brahmos Air Launched missile, and an array of bombs, among others.

The Su-30MKI, a 4.5 generation aircraft, can carry out complex manoeuvres at both high speeds and low speeds, which includes the iconic vertical charlie manoeuvre.

The aircraft, with the capability of air-to-air refueling, can also carry out long range patrol and other endurance missions.

The IAF is also in the process of upgrading its Su-30MKI fleet with an upgrade programme of over Rs 30,000.

The IAF, with Su-30MKI and Rafale fighter jets, has developed a strong package of fighters that can carry out tactical as well as strategic missions as per requirements.
