In a notable advancement for defense relations, India has initiated the delivery of its indigenous Akash Missile System to Armenia, marking a significant step in bilateral cooperation. The first battery, which includes four launchers and a Rajendra radar, was dispatched successfully in November 2024 by Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL). A second battery is scheduled for delivery by mid-2025, with Armenia set to receive a total of 15 Akash systems over the next four to five years.
Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), the Akash Missile System is designed to confront a variety of aerial threats, including fighter aircraft, drones, and cruise missiles. It features an operational range of 25 kilometers and an impressive success rate exceeding 90%. The system is equipped with Electronic Counter-Counter Measures (ECCM), which ensure reliable functioning even in contested airspace. Furthermore, over 96% of its components are produced domestically, reflecting India’s “Make for the World” initiative championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
This export is part of a ₹6,000 crore (approximately $750 million) agreement signed in 2022 with Bharat Dynamics Limited, which encompasses the provision of 15 Ashwin Air Defence Systems as well. These contracts are connected to a broader $2 billion arms deal established in 2020, which also includes the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher system, capable of reaching distances up to 70 kilometers. The version of the Akash system being supplied to Armenia has been customized to meet the nation’s specific operational requirements, showcasing India’s ability to deliver tailored defense solutions.
Since its induction into the Indian Air Force in 2014, the Akash has played a critical role in enhancing India’s air defense capabilities. It has gradually replaced older foreign systems, such as Israel’s Spyder, at vital forward airbases, including those in Leh. Currently, the Indian Army operates two regiments of the Akash Mk1 variant and has placed orders for additional regiments of the upgraded Akash Prime model.
Analysts regard India’s defense export to Armenia as a strategic victory for both countries. The deployment of the Akash system is expected to markedly enhance Armenia’s capability to defend against aerial threats, especially in the unstable South Caucasus region. Defense expert Augustine Vinod highlighted the Akash missile’s effectiveness, noting its remarkable success rate compared to other air defense systems.
India’s evolving role as a defense exporter is further illustrated by the interest in the Akash system from other nations, including the Philippines and the United Arab Emirates. Discussions with the UAE carry significant strategic implications, particularly in light of that nation’s security challenges posed by Houthi missile threats. Meanwhile, the Philippines is assessing the Akash system for its Shore-Based Air Defense Missile System Acquisition Project, aligning with India’s ambitions for deeper engagement in Indo-Pacific defense initiatives.
The logistical support accompanying deliveries to Armenia will include Missile Transportation Vehicles, Transportation and Loading Vehicles, and Power Supply Vehicles, ensuring optimal operational readiness and mobility for the armed forces.
The successful delivery of the Akash missile system to Armenia not only reinforces a vital strategic partnership but also signifies the increasing prominence of India’s indigenous defense industry on the world stage.
