India and France decided to focus on early finalisation of the defence industrial roadmap when PM Narendra Modi met French President Emanuel Macron over a lunch meeting here following the G20 summit.

According to the joint statement, India and France “reiterated their commitment to strengthen the defence cooperation through partnership in design, development, testing and manufacture of advanced defence technologies and platforms, and expand production in India, including for third countries in Indo-Pacific and beyond. France is one of India’s most trusted defence partners that sees itself as a pioneer in transfer of technology to India. It’s also looking to jointly develop next-generation defence equipment with India. The two countries look at each other as indispensable partners in the Indo-Pacific where France is a resident power.
Both the leaders underlined their role of providers of solutions for the Indo-Pacific through their cooperation in the framework of the International Solar Alliance, launched by India and France, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure.
The two leaders recalled six decades of India-France Space cooperation and reviewed the progress since the holding of the first Strategic Space Dialogue in June 2023.
President Macron and PM Modi acknowledged the strong India-France civil nuclear ties, good progress in the discussion for the Jaitapur nuclear plant project and welcomed the continuing engagement of both sides to expand bilateral cooperation to establish a partnership.

The NSG was created following the explosion in 1974 of a nuclear device by a non-nuclear-weapon State (India), which demonstrated that nuclear technology transferred for peaceful purposes could be misused.
•The grouping has 48 participating governments and the NSG Guidelines are implemented by each member in accordance with its national laws and practices.
•The NSG takes decisions by consensus.
