Indian Air Force Seeks to Procure Fifth-Generation Fighter Jets Amidst Growing Security Concerns

The Indian Air Force (IAF) is in the process of evaluating the acquisition of two to three squadrons of fifth-generation fighter jets from international manufacturers in a bid to enhance its combat capabilities. This interim procurement is aimed at bolstering readiness while awaiting the operational rollout of the domestically developed Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), according to defence sources.

Each squadron typically consists of 18 to 20 aircraft, which suggests that the IAF is targeting an acquisition of approximately 40 to 60 fifth-generation fighters. The proposal has recently been discussed in a high-level meeting with government officials, pinpointing the necessity of maintaining the IAF’s technological superiority in light of escalating concerns surrounding China’s advancements in airpower and the potential transfer of sophisticated fighter jets to Pakistan.

An influential committee within the Defence Ministry, chaired by Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, has lent its support to this initiative, emphasizing the crucial need for deterrence measures along India’s borders.

While a final decision has yet to be reached, discussions at the official level are reportedly ongoing. The United States has offered its cutting-edge F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter as a potential candidate, while Russia has pitched the Su-57 Felon. India previously withdrew from a collaborative project with Russia focused on fifth-generation fighter aircraft but still retains the option to potentially rejoin that venture.

In addition to the five-generation fighter jets, India is advancing a separate initiative to produce 114 next-generation 4.5+ fighters in partnership with a foreign entity, aligning this effort with the ‘Make in India’ strategy. This could culminate in a government-to-government agreement following a competitive tender process.

The urgency for this modernization effort is underscored by China’s advancements toward sixth-generation fighter technology, showcasing the IAF’s commitment to addressing capability gaps before the anticipated entry of the AMCA into service later in the decade.
