An Indian Armed Forces contingent has arrived in Seychelles to take part in the 11th edition of the Joint Military Exercise “LAMITIYE–2026” in collaboration with the Seychelles Defence Forces (SDF). Scheduled to take place at the Seychelles Defence Academy from March 9 to March 20, 2026, the exercise is designed to deepen the existing military relationship between India and Seychelles.

The term “Lamitiye,” which translates to “Friendship” in Creole, underscores the commitment to a robust defense partnership between the two nations. Since its inception in 2001, the biennial exercise has served as a platform to strengthen military cooperation.

This year’s exercise marks a noteworthy development, as it will see participation from all three branches of the Indian Armed Forces. The contingent includes troops from the Assam Regiment, alongside representatives from the Indian Navy and the Indian Air Force. The naval frigate INS Trikand and an IAF C-130 aircraft are also set to participate, reflecting a comprehensive tri-service engagement.

The primary objective of this exercise is to enhance synergy, cooperation, and interoperability between the Indian and Seychellois forces, with a particular emphasis on sub-conventional operations in semi-urban environments and peacekeeping initiatives. Over the course of 12 days, the troops from both nations will collaboratively train, plan, and execute tactical drills aimed at neutralizing potential threats in semi-urban scenarios. The training will also introduce new-generation equipment and technologies.

Participants will engage in various activities, including field training exercises, combat discussions, case studies, lectures, and demonstrations, all contributing to the overall learning experience. The exercise will culminate in a two-day validation exercise, designed to showcase the operational coordination and readiness achieved through the training sessions.

Ultimately, Exercise LAMITIYE–2026 aims not only to bolster bilateral military relations but also to enhance mutual understanding and promote joint operations between the armed forces of India and Seychelles. The event is expected to facilitate the exchange of skills, experiences, and best practices, further solidifying the partnership between the two countries.
